U-Hi's Turner doing his best

University High's Don Turner has led his team to a 2-1 record so far in the early stages of the GSL schedule, but lost a tough 17-0 to Gonzaga Prep in their last game. It's not what the 6-0, 165-pound athlete was hoping for, but he feels it won't detract the team from reaching their top goal.

"Well, our goal is to win GSL again and get farther in the playoffs than we did last year," Turner told Dawgman.com this past weekend. University lost last year in first round to the Richland Bombers of the Big-9 League.

While not happy with his team's performance last Friday, Don feels as if he's doing his best, especially as a tenacious, ball-hawking defensive back. "I'm excelling on the defensive side of the ball," he said. "Teams don't throw to my side of the ball. On offense, I'm getting double-teamed a lot. I'm not getting as many touches there." Don has two picks in three games so far.

On the recruiting front, Turner is hearing from Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington and Idaho. His only offer is from the Cougars, given to Don in April.

Being only an hour away from Pullman has allowed Don a chance to visit Washington State up close and personal. "I've been to the Idaho and Cal games in Pullman," said Turner. "I would like to go to a Washington game, but since it's so far away I probably will only be able to do an official visit. I haven't really thought about it too much, but I'll probably visit some Northwest schools."

And the coach recruiting Turner for the Dawgs? "Coach Gilbertson. He just hoped that I had a good season. He told me that they are recruiting me and to keep up all the good work."

We will be in touch with Don later in the season for a recruiting update.
