Trip report - Joel Smith

Joel Smith, a 6-5, 190-pound small forward from Lompoc, California via Wolfeboro (NH) Brewster Academy, visited Washington officially last weekend with his parents. spoke Monday night with Joel's father Joe, and he was able to break down the visit.

"Well, we got in very late Thursday night," Joe said. "We had breakfast and then Joel went to class with Brandon (Roy)." Roy was Smith's host for the weekend.

Joel and Joe had been up to Seattle in June to see things first-hand unofficially, so it was now time for Joel's Mother to get the grand tour.

"My wife had never been there, and things went very well," Joe said. "She liked the campus, the academic support and the coaching staff. We got her blessing, which was very importanat. We wanted her to see everything and meet everybody. All the players were very cordial to us, very friendly. We got a good feel for what campus life is like up there and what the day-to-day situations are going to be like. And this time around, the team was there and we got to see them in open gym.

"They welcomed us with open arms. It was touching."

The Smiths took in the Nevada-Washington football game, and even though the Huskies came out on the losing end it was still a special time for Joel and his family.

"We got a chance to go to the football game," Joe said. "We got a chance to see the stadium and it was a really good experience for Joel."

Joe has a good feeling after meeting the Husky hoopsters. "I think they are going to shock some people," he said. "I think they are going to have a good year. They are definitely taking steps in the right direction."

A big step is getting the right players into Lorenzo Romar's system, and Joel seems to fit that mold. "Right now he's taking care of business in the classroom and playing in open gym," Joe said. "Their coaches can't be there, but college coaches are there.

And Coach Smith from Brewster says that there isn't a coach that comes in that doesn't talk about Joel's leadership. But they know he's spoken for. He's totally committed to the Dawgs."
