DL Maurice Murray update

As it stands now, Poly's Maurice Murray may be only taking one official trip this winter. Murray, a 6'4", 300-pound lineman from Long Beach wants to check out the great northwest.

"I left a message on Coach Neuheisel's answering machine and he called me back telling me that it was great that I committed and telling me about the school and stuff like that," Maurice told Dawgman.com recently.

"I'm going to try and go to a game this year if I can."

Murray enjoyed watching the Huskies televised home opener against Michigan. "I thought they played a good game on both sides. They came through in the end."

Maurice has a number of reasons for choosing the northernmost Pac-10 school as his favorite. "Well, it's a good school and I can get a good education there. They have a history of putting linemen into the NFL. They've got one guy from De La Salle that's already there (Robin Meadow)."

Speaking of the Spartans, Murray can't wait to play De La Salle. "Yeah, I'm looking forward to playing against Derek Landri and their quarterback (Matt Gutierrez)," said Maurice.

They play this weekend.

Just like his coaches, Murray feels that the team is playing well but knows that they are in tough this weekend.

"I'm playing both ways equally," said Maurice. "We're working our way into the season. "We need to work on assignments, blocking, our receivers need to work on catching passes, things like that."

When talking about his teammates, Murray has turned into a bit of a recruiter in his own right. His goal is to be a Husky and he is hopeful that some of his teammates might be interested as well.

"I talk to Darnell Bing and Manual Wright about Washington," he said. "Darnell doesn't really know yet what he's going to do, but I know Manual wants to set up a visit there."

And himself? "I'm still getting letters and media guides from schools." He only has one other offer besides the Huskies. That offer comes from San Jose State.

Although he's had Washington at the top of his list for a long time, Murray was unclear about taking other official visits. Now he has a plan, a plan that will include at least one official trip.

"I'm going to take a trip to Washington first for sure," said Murray. "Then I'll decide if I need to take any other trips after that."
