Goodrum surprise visitor to Montlake

Rashaad Goodrum is a 6-3, 225-pound DE/LB from Pine Forest, North Carolina by way of Los Angeles Valley College. Goodrum came to Seattle for an official visit to Washington this weekend at the same time another JC player - Dashon Goldson - was also in town. With Goldson leaning hard toward coming back to the place he signed with out of high school, will the Huskies go 2-2 in recruiting JC players this past weekend?

Goodrum is a sophomore at LAVC and will have 3 years to play 2. He'll be available in September of 2004

He was heavily recruited in high school, by such teams as North Carolina State, North Carolina, Tennessee, Florida and South Carolina, among others, but didn't sign with a school. "I didn't take the SAT because I wasn't going to qualify, so I went straight to a JC," Goodrum told Dawgman.com Sunday after his visit.

His official visit to Washington this weekend wasn't one that was on the radar of most services. "They started calling me," Rashaad said of the Huskies' interest. "My coach (Ron Ponciano) knows some coaches up there and he sent some tape up there."

And his trip? "They showed me a good time, I was really impressed by Washington," he said. "I liked the school, I liked everything I saw this weekend."

Washington had Joe Lobendahn host Rashaad first and Matt Fountaine second. "They just showed me around, showed me what Seattle had to offer," Goodrum said of his hosts. "They told me what would happen and what it would be like if I went there. They fed me good, they looked out for me.

"I liked everything. It was new to me, but I liked it. I could see myself playing at Washington."

And the coaches? Listening to Rashaad, it seems clear they are looking him for one main spot. "They want me to play the REB position," he said. "They basically showed me around and told me that I have a chance to start right away and make an impact on their defense."

Goodrum isn't done with the recruiting process, but he's close. "I have one more trip to take, to USC (12/12), and then I'm going to make a decision," he said. I told them (UW coaches) it was between USC and Washington."

The Trojans want Goodrum at middle linebacker, according to Rashaad. They have not offered a scholarship yet.

Syracuse, Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky and Fresno State are other schools he is currently considering.
