Huskies Thump Cougars

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State's Bianca McCall tallied a game-tying high 22 points but it wasn't enough as the Cougars fell to the Washington Huskies 82-64 in Pacific-10 Conference women's basketball action, Saturday at Friel Court.

Washington improved its record to 15-10 overall and 8-8 in the Pac-10. WSU dropped to 5-20 overall and 1-15 in conference play.

Washington's Giuliana Mendiola matched McCall with 22 points with Andrea Lalum not far behind with 21 for the Huskies. Gioconda Mendiola (14 points) and Cameo Hicks (12 points) also hit double-digits for the Huskies.

The Cougars held an early 8-6 lead but an 8-0 UW run gave the Huskies a 14-8 advantage with 14:02 remaining in the first half. The Huskies held a 38-28 lead at the 1:27 mark but WSU closed out the opening 20 minutes with five consecutive points to go into the break down 38-33.

WSU pulled to within two at 47-45 nearly four minutes into the second half but UW was able to turn back the Cougars' rally. The Huskies went on a 17-5 run over a 5:54 span to re-establish its double-digit advantage at 64-50 with 10:17 remaining. The Cougars would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way.

"For [the first] 20 minutes I thought our effort was sustained and intense; we worked hard and battled," WSU Head Coach Sherri Murrell said. "For the second 20 minutes we just didn't have a sustained effort."

The attendance figure of 1,360 was the largest audience to witness a WSU home game since March 13, 1993 when 1,458 fans saw the Cougars play Washington. Earlier in the week, Murrell had announced that she will donate $1,000 to a charity if 1,000 or more people attended the Washington game.

"It was absolutely awesome," Murrell said of the fan support. "I felt like it was our sixth man in the first half. The kids just didn't play off of it in the second half."
