Husky Women Defeat ASU

Led by a season-high 31 points from senior All-America candidate Giuliana Mendiola, Washington women's basketball took care of Arizona State 63-55 in front of 3,679 fans at Bank of America Arena, Thursday evening. The Huskies (16-10, 9-8 Pac-10) extended their winning streak against the Sun Devils (17-9, 11-6) in Seattle to seven straight, with the last ASU win on UW's home court coming on Feb. 3, 1996.

Mendiola led the Husky charge, shooting 7-for-14 from the field and a career-high 16-for-20 clip from the free-throw line. The senior also chipped in seven points and four assists. Senior Andrea Lalum added 15 points, while redshirt freshman Jill Bell grabbed 13 rebounds, 11 in the second half.

The Sun Devils had one player, Kylan Loney, in double figures with 12 points. Amy Denson had a team-high eight rebounds, while Aubree Johnson and Kristen Kovesdy each grabbed seven boards.

After taking a 4-0 lead on two-straight buckets from freshman Cameo Hicks, ASU used a 9-2 run jump out to as much as a seven-point lead (18-11) at 10:54. The Sun Devils maintained that advantage through the end of the first half, leading by as much as nine, 27-18, with 3:00 left on the clock. Loney's three at the buzzer game ASU a six-point cushion, 32-26, heading into the intermission.

Matching each other basket for basket early on in the second-half, Washington regained the lead for good after a three-pointer by Lalum at 11:20 turned the momentum the Huskies way. Washington extended its lead to as much as eight, 50-42, at 7:16. ASU posted 7-0 run to get within one, 50-49, at 4:11.

Lalum's layin at 3:54 once again kept the Sun Devils at bay, and the Huskies held on for the eight-point victory.

Washington will host Arizona in its final regular season home game, Saturday, Feb. 28, at 1 p.m. The game will be televised live by Fox Sports Net with Mary Murphy and Brian Davis calling the action.
