UW Gymnasts Upset #1 UCLA

The 15th-ranked Washington women's gymnastics team upset top-ranked UCLA 197.225 to 197.100 before a crowd of 2,161 at Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. The win was the second ever against the Bruins, coming exactly six years to the day since Washington's last victory against UCLA.

Washington was led by senior Emily Pritchard (Buckley), who finished second in the all-around with a score of 39.725. That score equals her career best mark she set last week at Arizona. Pritchard's score is the second-best all-around mark in Husky history. UCLA's Jeanette Antolin won the all-around with a score of 39.750.

Pritchard won bars with a score of 9.975, was second on floor exercise at 9.925, placed third on balance beam at 9.950 and was fifth on vault at 9.875.

Molly Seaman also helped the Huskies to the victory, winning the beam with a career best score of 9.975. She also had a career-high on bars with a 9.950.

Antolin took top honors on vault with a 10.000 and won the floor exercise with a 9.950

The Huskies took the early lead thanks to several Bruin mishaps on bars. UCLA's Lori Winn and Holly Murdock both fell during their routines and Kristen Maloney, the Bruins third gymnast on the event, suffered a form break. Despite finishing with three strong performances, led by Antolin's 9.950, the Bruins scored 48.475 while Washington chalked up a score of 48.725 while opening on vault. Pritchard led the Huskies with a 9.875 on vault, finishing fifth overall on the event.

The Huskies strong showing on bars during the second rotation allowed them to own a 98.375 to 98.050 advantage at the midpoint of the meet. Washington's bars score of 49.650 was a school record, bettering the 49.475 they scored two weeks ago in a dual meet victory against Arizona State.

The Huskies turned in three of the top scores on bars led by Pritchard's first-place finish at 9.975. Carly Dockendorf and Seaman tied UCLA's Antolin for second with scores of 9.950. For Seaman, the score was a career high. Pritchard's win on bars marked the sixth time in eight meets she has taken top honors on the event. She entered Friday's competition ranked first in the nation on the apparatus.

UCLA, competing on vault during the second rotation, turned in the top four scores, highlighted by Antolin's 10. She is undefeated on vault this season in eight competitions and her score was her fifth perfect mark this season on the event.

Washington kept up its strong scoring on beam during the Huskies' third rotation. Thanks to Seaman's career high of 9.975 on beam, Washington scored 49.425. The Bruins managed a score of 49.475 on floor during their third rotation to take a small piece out of the Huskies lead that stood at 147.800 to 147.525 entering the meet's final events.

UCLA posted a 49.575 on the beam during their final rotation, but it was not enough to catch the Huskies. Washington hit on all of its floor routines to score 49.425 and wrap up the win. Dockendorf and Pritchard both scored 9.925s on floor to tie for second place.

UCLA entered the meet having tied the natioanl scoring record last Friday with a 198.875 in a dual meet victory against Oregon State.

The Huskies will host their second straight top-five opponent next Friday when fourth-ranked Utah visits Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion for a 7 p.m. meet that also includes No. 12 Iowa and Illinois-Chicago.

Friday's meet will be televised by Fox Sports Northwest on March 2 at 7 p.m. and on March 3 at noon.
