Kickin' it with local Fotball Dawgs

Huskies fans can be proud of a fine heritage of successful athletes that currently populate the professional soccer ranks. We are very fortunate to live in a city where we can continue to follow their exploits first hand as the Seattle Sounders' have become home to a significant crop of former Dawgs. Sounders UW alumni include defender Ryan Edwards, defender Scott Jenkins, midfielder Viet Nguyen, midfielder Billy Sleeth, midfielder Ben Somoza, and goalkeeper Danny Waltman.

Waltman begins his professional soccer career this season with the Sounders. The University of Washington graduate joins the team after a successful collegiate career earning 2nd Team All-Pac 10 Honors as a Junior. In 2002, Waltman lead the conference in saves per game with five, had a 1.62 goals against average and posted the second best saves performance by a Pac-10 goalkeeper with nine saves against South Carolina. Waltman as competed on the West Regional ODP team as well as the Washington State ODP team. He was a part of the club team Solaris, which won the Washington State Cup six years in a row, earning Player of the Match honors in 1996. Attending Bellarmine Prep High School near Tacoma, Wash., Waltman earned First Team All-League honors all four years and First Team All-Area honors in his final two prep seasons. During Waltman's tenure at Bellarmine Prep the team went undefeated all four seasons earning league championships each year, helped Bellarmine place fourth in state his freshman season, and was named League Co-MVP his junior year.

Scott Jenkins # 2

Entering his eighth season with the Sounders, Jenkins continues to add to his career totals as he serves as the team's all-time leader in games and minutes played. After playing soccer for the University of Washington, Jenkins joined the Seattle Bigfoot of the USL before playing for the Sounders in 1997. Jenkins has taken a more active role in the overall soccer operation for the Sounders; he currently serves as the Corporate Partnerships Director and helps out with the Sounders youth programs. In 2001, Jenkins was named Sounders Defender of the Year. Jenkins currently works in the Sounders office managing and coordinating corporate sponsorships.

Ryan Edwards # 6

After graduating from the University of Washington, Edwards joined the Sounders in 1998. After only one season, Edwards moved to California to play for the Bay Area Seals in 1999 and 2000. Returning to the Sounders in 2001, Edwards is now among team's leaders in all-time minutes played. In 2003, Edwards was voted to the A-League Team of the Week in Week # 12 for a two-goal performance in a 3-2 win over Minnesota.

Billy Sleeth # 8

Sleeth was an original 1st round draft choice of Major League Soccer's Chicago Fire in 2002. With Chicago in 2002, Sleeth played in 13 games, starting seven and registered one assist. In 2003 Sleeth joined the Colorado Rapids but did not play because of an injury. Playing college soccer for the University of Washington, Sleeth anchored a strong defense throughout his Husky career and was named to the all Pac-10 team his junior year. After college, Sleeth returned home to play for the Spokane Shadow of the Premier Development League (PDL) in 1999. He was a member of the United Soccer League's Select Team that toured Portugal in 2001. That same year, Sleeth led the PDL Sounder Select team to an upset victory over the Dallas Burn in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, scoring three goals and one assist. Sleeth attended Ferris High School in Spokane where he led his team to a state championship as a senior. His team was ranked as high as ninth in the nation by the NSCAA/Umbro High School Soccer in 1997. Sleeth earned first team All-GSL honors as a junior defender and as a senior midfielder. Sleeth also played on the ODP team for five years and was on the U-18 Regional ODP team.

Viet Nguyen # 12

Nguyen was the Sounders territorial selection in the 1999 A-League draft. Attending the University of Washington, he played in 69 games notching 15 goals and 11 assists as a Husky. Nguyen is currently ranked third on the Sounders all-time assist list with 20, and is also ranked tenth among the Sounders all-time point leaders with 48.

Ben Somoza # 21

Joining the Sounders midway through the 2003 season, this will be Somoza's first full season with the Sounders. As a Husky, Somoza led his team in points with 17 in his senior season with five goals and seven assists. In his final two collegiate seasons he scored a combined 11 goals. Somoza was named to the All-Pac 10 team in both his junior and senior seasons. Just after graduation, Somoza was drafted in the second round of the 2002 A-League Draft by the Portland Timbers. Somoza actively participates in the local soccer community by coaching youth soccer for the new Evergreen Soccer Academy. Top Stories
