Brockman talks about visit spoke with Jon Brockman Wednesday, and Jon brought us up to speed on his busy basketball schedule, set to commence Thursday with the 2004 USA Basketball Men's Youth Development Festival in Colorado Springs. But before he left, Jon did take an unofficial visit to Washington with two of his Friends of Hoop teammates, Mitch Johnson and Martell Webster.

"Me, Mitch and Martell took an unofficial visit up there," Brockman said of his trip to Montlake. "We saw the campus and got a chance to talk to all the players and coaches." So why did Brockman, whose sister Kirsten currently attends Washington and played basketball before an injury caused her to retire, feel the need to see the school despite his familiarity?

"Well, I hadn't really seen the school, to be honest," he said. "We've definitely played there, but I hadn't seen the rest of it. I wanted to see what things were like from an educational stand-point." Jon said that he's leaning toward pursuing something in business while in college, but that's not set in stone.

So what was Brockman's first impression? "It's a beautiful campus," he said. "We saw it on a really hot day. It was nice. I was surprised at how big the school is. That's not a bad thing. Nothing really shocked me, because I already knew a bit about it."

The same can't be said for Johnson and Webster. "I think they enjoyed the visit a lot and definitely learned a lot," Jon said of his AAU teammates, from O'Dea and Seattle Prep, respectively. Brockman said that they learned how college life would be like at Washington, including visiting with tutors and academic advisors. "There was a girl there who lives in the dorms that kind of showed us the ropes," he added. "We also talked to the weight trainers and nutritionists."

Jon is leaving Seattle today to join the West team during the 2004 USA Basketball Men's Youth Development Festival. Besides Brockman and Webster, the 2004 USA West Team will be represented by: Brayden Bell (Brighton H.S. / Salt Lake, Utah); Mario Chalmers (Barlett H.S. / Anchorage, Alaska); Darren Collison (Etiwanda H.S. / Rialto, Calif.); Micah Downs (Bothell H.S. / Bothell, Wash.); Anthony Goods (Centennial H.S. / Corona, Calif.); Amir Johnson (Westchester H.S. / Los Angeles, Calif.); Marcus Johnson (Westchester H.S. / Paramount, Calif.); Andre McGee (Canyon Springs H.S. / Moreno Valley, Calif.); Brian Morris (Jefferson H.S. / Portland, Ore.) and Sam Warren (Cherry Creek H.S. / Greenwood Village, Colo.).

"Then I go to the Nike tournament (in Indianapolis) the 6th," Brockman said. "Then I come home for two days and then go to Augusta, Georgia for the Peach Jam. Then I come home and then go to Las Vegas (for the Big Time tournament).
