Catching up with ... Ryan Appleby

There's no rush. There are steaks to eat, mashed potatoes to consume. Large quantities of spaghetti and pot roast are just a few of items on menu in Ryan Appleby's immediate future. Even though the 6-foot-3 point guard from Stanwood is getting re-acquainted with living back in the Evergreen State in a somewhat leisurely manner, you still can't take a gym rat out of the gym.

"I've had my fair share of home-cooked meals now, so that's good," Ryan told recently, adding that Stanwood has been home-base for him again since early May.

For the time being.

So when will all the pickup games and the workouts in the shadow of Hec Ed commence? "I'll start up with all of that in August," he said.

"I've been going down to Emerald City in Queen Anne and doing workouts and then coming home and lifting at night. We do individual workouts first and then play pickup games later. I've been working mostly on half-court stuff, scoring in the half-court game, creating shots for yourself without a whole lot of room, stuff like that."

Appleby, who is transferring from the University of Florida after his freshman season, noted that his current summer regimen strays little from what was the norm in Gainesville. "At Florida we didn't work out a whole lot together," he said. "We would play some pickup games together. Besides that we didn't do a lot of individual workouts together."

So Ryan has just been doing what he always does - taking care of business in his own way. But he hasn't quite come to grips with the circumstances beyond his control. Like not playing this coming fall.

"It hasn't hit me yet," Appleby said of the fact that he has to sit. "It'll probably hit me during the first week of the season, during the non-conference games. It'll probably hit me then."

It'll be up to the coaches to keep Ryan in the game. "I talk to them every once in a while," he said. "I haven't talked to them the past couple of weeks because they are doing the recruiting thing, so they've been gone. I talked to them right before they left. They were just checking in, seeing what I'm doing."

Working out, most likely. And maybe scarfing down an extra helping of homemade lasagna while he's at it.
