Newton Visits UW this weekend

Joe Newton is a 6-7, 230-pound tight end prospect that plays both football and basketball for Roseburg High School in Roseburg, Oregon. Even though Joe is done with football and focusing more on the roundball now, he still has some unfinished football-related business to attend to.

"I'm looking foward to that one," Joe told Dawgman.com about his upcoming official visit to Washington this weekend. "Great football school, great academic school. It seems to be a good place all the way around." He's already officially visited Oregon and has offers from both as well as Oregon State. Joe does not profess to claiming a leader just yet. "I don't think I can make a choice yet between those three."

The coach recruiting Newton for the Dawgs? Randy Hart. "Coach Hart called last week," Joe said. "He just talked about the details of the visit, making sure everything is all set up."

Newton weighs 230 pounds now, but usually drops 5-10 pounds during the season. "I burn a lot of calories playing basketball," he said. He's looking at a target weight of about 245-250 when he enters college next fall.

Joe is an exceptional basketball player, and he explained the differences between the conditioning involved with hoops and football. "I think there's quite a difference," he said. "There's a big difference in the conditioning. It takes a while for my legs to come back in basketball, but they are coming back."
