Will Hasty Lead the Way?

J.R. Hasty just finished an official trip to Penn State this past weekend and told Dawgman.com about it, as well as his upcoming visit to Washington this weekend. Will the senior running back from Bellevue be the first of the heralded 'blue chip' in-state prospects to verbally commit to Tyrone Willingham?

"It was kind of what I expected - a big college in the middle of Pennsylvania," Hasty said Monday. "It's a college town. It's similar to Eugene, a smaller-town environment. It's just the college. It's way different than Seattle."

Joe Paterno and the Nittany Lions coaching staff want Hasty to move to Happy Valley, having already offered a scholarship. "Of course they want me to go there, but there wasn't extreme pressure to make a decision or anything," said J.R. "I really like him (Paterno). He's a nice guy.

"It's a long ways out there being on the East coast, but I like the school and the coaches."

Next up is Hasty's last visit - to Washington. The Huskies are desperately looking for an Ichiro-esque home-town leadoff hitter to get their recruiting efforts a jolt. Could Hasty be that guy? "I have a lot of buddies that go there, and I want to get a chance to talk with Coach Willingham a little more," said J.R. "I met him (Willingham) once, but I want to talk to him again, get a better feel for him. I want to know what's going on with the offensive coordinator and the offense over at U-Dub."

Willingham is expected to visit Hasty in-home before he heads to Montlake.

Arizona State, Oregon, Penn State and Washington are J.R's final four schools that he's looking at.

Now that J.R. is graduating in the spring, it's time for this four-time state champion to have a little fun. "I'm just working out right now, but I'm probably going to play baseball this spring," he said. "I haven't played in a while, so I'm just going to mess around with it."
