Simmons, Burt named Players of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Washington guard Tre Simmons has been named the U.S. Bank Pacific-10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for February 21-27, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. Hansen also announced that Washington junior guard Kayla Burt has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 21-28.

Simmons, a senior from Seattle, Wash., led Washington to a home sweep over Arizona State and No. 9 Arizona, averaging 26.5 points while shooting 18-of-33 (.545) from the field, 11-of-17 (.647) from three-point range and 6-of-8 (.750) from the free throw line.

Against the Sun Devils, Simmons tied his career high with 29 points on 9-of-19 (.474) shooting, including 6-of-7 (.857) from beyond the arc. He also hit 5-of-6 (.833) free throws, collected four rebounds, had one assist and a steal. Simmons scored 12 of his 29 points during a 14-5 second half run that keyed the Washington victory.

Against the Wildcats on Senior Day, Simmons notched 24 points on 9-of-14 (.643) shooting, including 5-of-10 (.500) from downtown. He also had four steals, three rebounds and two assists. Simmons ignited the Husky offense early, scoring 10 of the UW's first 16 points in the game.

Saturday's win allowed the Huskies to finish the season with a 15-0 home record, and kept them in the race for the Pac-10 regular season title. Washington has won its last 22 home games, dating back to an 86-84 setback to UCLA on Jan. 10, 2004.

Washington (23-4, 13-3), travels to California and Stanford this week to complete its regular-season schedule.

This is the first weekly honor for Simmons and the second this season for a Washington player. Junior guard Nate Robinson received the weekly Pac-10 award on Nov. 29.

Burt, a native of Arlington, Wash., averaged 14.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in two games as Washington split at Arizona State and Arizona. On the weekend, she shot 47.4 percent from the field (9-of-19), 54.5 percent from beyond the arc (6-of-11) and 83.3 percent (5-of-6) from the foul line.

In the 64-60 win over Arizona on Feb. 26, Burt led the Huskies to its first win over the Wildcats in Tucson since 1995, contributing a career-high 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting and a career-high six three-pointers. Burt's six treys came one shy of tying the UW single-game record of 7 set twice by Loree Payne (2002) and Megan Franza (2001). She led the Huskies' second-half comeback against the Wildcats, scoring 17 of her 23 points after intermission. Burt secured the win, knocking down two free throws to extend the Husky lead to four points with 10 seconds left in the game.

In the loss at Arizona State on Feb. 24, Burt had six points, four rebounds and dished out three assists.

Washington (13-5 overall, 9-9 Pac-10) finished seventh in the Conference and earned the seventh seed in the 2005 State Farm Pac-10 Tournament. The Huskies will face No. 10 seed Oregon State Friday at 6 p.m. in the opening game, at HP Pavilion at San Jose.

The Player of the Week honor is the first for Burt and is the 23rd all-time selection for Washington.
