Diamond Dawgs off to great start

PHOENIX, AZ - Junior Tyler Davidson had four hits and smacked two long balls to go with senior pitcher Shawn Kohn's five shutout innings to lead Washington to a 10-6 win over Missouri last night at the Rawlings Spring Training Tournament.

Kohn, a native of Woodinville, picked up the victory. He allowed just three Tiger hits. The right-hander struck out three and faced only two batters over the minimum in five innings.

Missouri closed the gap with three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh, but none came off of Kohn.

Washington opened the scoring in the second inning when Davidson drove a full-count pitch over the wall in right-center field. Bryan Johnson and John Otness followed with singles before DH Mike Wagner walked to load the bases. Sophomore catcher Ben Johnson (Bellevue) doubled to left to plate two runs.

An RBI groundout from Brandon Jacobson drove in Wagner to give the UW a 4-0 lead.

Davidson's second blast came in the third inning when he crushed a ball well over the fence in left-center field, making the score 5-0.

Davidson finished the day 4-for-5, with four runs batted in and a stolen base. Johnson went 3-for-4 with three singles and an RBI.

In the eighth as Missouri had climbed within two runs at 8-6, the Tigers' Ryan Rallo was thrown out at the plate to kill their comeback hopes. Rallo was trying to score from second on a single.

Washington plays Northwestern at 1:30PM MST today at Papago Park.
