San Diego lineman gets Husky offer

Where's the beef? Husky fans love their linemen, especially athletic offensive linemen, and that's exactly what University City HS (San Diego, CA) OL/DL Cody Pope is. Pope called from Lake Havasu while he was on a week-long vacation with his family and updated us on how he was doing and where he is at in the recruiting process.

"It's really hot," Pope said after spending the day out on the lake. "We just came up here to get away from everything. San Diego can be a pretty busy place sometimes and we just wanted to get away."

Pope has been garnering some high-profile attention of late, following his impressive showing at the All-American Combine in Los Angeles and the NIKE Combine in Palo Alto in May. One team paying particular attention is the Washington Huskies.

"It was funny," Pope said laughingly. "(Defensive coordinator Kent Baer) and I were on the same flight from San Diego to San Francisco. We talked for a while. He said he was a defensive coach, but he knew who I was.

"He saw me again at the airport as we were getting ready to head back home and said that (offensive line coach Mike Denbrock) really liked me and said to expect a call soon. I got that call and we talked a lot about Washington and what they are doing up there."

That workout and eventual call turned in to something else this week. "My coach just yesterday called me and told me that Washington offered me," an excited Pope said. "When I get back to practice on Monday he will give me the phone number so I can call them back."

Pope (6-5, 275) runs very well for a big man and interestingly, his senior season will be the first time he has ever played offensive line. No matter, almost every school recruiting him sees his future on the offensive side of the ball.

"I'm 6-5 right now," Pope said. "If I grow at all, which I probably will, I will probably be too tall for defensive line. I know I can do well, but I want to prove it to them."

Pope recently attended camp at USC and seemed to enjoy his time there and says that he is open to every school recruiting him. Washington, along with Oklahoma, Colorado (offer), Oregon, UCLA, USC, Idaho (offer) and San Diego State (offer) are the schools he is hearing the most from and are his favorites right now.

"I'm not really looking to stay in-state, like a lot of other guys are," Pope said matter-of-factly. "I want to keep my options open and see what other schools are out there. I don't want to limit myself. I want to see what the different schools in different parts of the country have to offer.

"Washington opened my eyes with their offer. I don't have any ties there, but I'm an outdoors-type of guy. I like to fish and camp and all that stuff and Washington is just a beautiful place."

Besides the scenery, the major reason Pope likes the Huskies is because of head coach Tyrone Willingham. "I like the new hire they just got up there," Pope stated. "He's really trustworthy and a good coach. I want to see how they do this season. They should be good."

Pope insisted that he is open to any school that shows interest in him, but some of these early offers mean more to him because of one thing.

"These schools are really going out on a limb offering me even though I haven't played offense before, that means a lot," a thankful Pope said. "I want to show them this season that they aren't wrong and then take some official visits."

Pope hasn't set up any unofficial visits or made any plans for camps, but this nugget will end up on team's radars with a solid senior season.
