Montgomery prepares for unofficial to UW

There are a lot of excellent running back prospects who will be seniors next year in the state of California. One of the hottest of the bunch is Cordova HS (Rancho Cordova, CA) RB James Montgomery. Up until late last week his three favorite schools included Washington, UCLA and Arizona, but a new school has entered the picture.

"I visited Cal last Thursday (June 16th) and they offered me," Montgomery told Dawgman.com. "They're in my list of favorites right now.

"I really enjoyed myself there. I got to walk around and see the facilities and I met all of the coaches. Their running backs coach (Ron Gould) was really cool and (head coach Jeff) Tedford was really cool too. I had a lot of fun there."

Up until last week, Montgomery sported 10 offers (Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Arizona, UCLA, Arizona State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Mississippi and Tennessee) but recently Auburn, Colorado and Boise State joined Cal, lifting his total to 14.

Next Thursday (June 30th) Montgomery and his grandfather are both headed to Seattle and they will be on campus the following day for his unofficial visit with the Huskies. Montgomery has already visited once, attending a basketball game in which the Dawgs beat Arizona in January.

"That visit was real cool," Montgomery said. "I got to visit Pike Place Market when I was up there and I took a boat ride across Lake Washington – that was tight. The skyline of Seattle is so cool with all the big buildings. Down here in Sacramento we only have like three big buildings so I really liked it.

"I didn't get to see a lot of the campus or school when I was there and that's what I plan to do with my grandpa when we come up there. I know that I like all of the Washington coaches. Especially (linebackers coach/recruiting coordinator Chris) Tormey and (head coach Tyrone) Willingham."

When asked if he had a leader, Montgomery hesitated to name one. The reason?

"All four of the schools are about even in my mind right now," Montgomery stated. "That's the real reason I'm taking all of these visits. When I get done with them - because I'm going to visit UCLA next month - we're just going to sit down and write up all the pros and cons and decide where I should go.

"I still plan on making my decision before the school year, but it may be later this summer instead of July," Montgomery added. "Maybe more like August."

Fans of all four schools will be on pins and needles waiting for his decision.
