Hill eyeing the Huskies

One of the prominent sayings in football is, "You win games in the trenches". One difference-maker in the trenches that has been getting a lot of attention from the Washington Huskies is Oakland (Calif.) McClymonds DT Derrick Hill. Dawgman.com was able to catch up with the big man from the bay area Tuesday evening and he updated us on recruiting and some of his plans this fall.

"Right now I don't have any leaders because I haven't seen all of the schools yet," Hill said. "Basically, I plan on taking all of my visits. That way I can make the best decision for myself."

Hill claims offers from a plethora of schools, including Washington, California, Arizona, USC, Arizona State, Colorado, Mississippi, Oregon, Kansas, Kansas State, UNLV, Utah and San Diego State.

"Right now the ones I'm looking at the hardest are Washington, Cal, USC, Oregon, ASU, Arizona and Colorado," Hill said. "Arizona has been sending me stuff since I was in the 10th grade. I also get a ton of handwritten stuff from Washington and Oregon. I get stuff from those guys every day. They all send their fair share of stuff though."

Washington's ties to Hill don't just come from the fact that he is being recruited by the school. His godmother's entire family lives in the Seattle area. "My godmother is up in Seattle right now," Hill said with a laugh. "She said it's nice weather right now."

Washington Offensive Coordinator Tim Lappano is the main contact for Hill on the Washington staff, but he says there is another coach that he is looking forward to meeting. "Washington having a black head coach is a big deal," Hill said referring to the Huskies' head coach Tyrone Willingham. "That is really rare in the college and pro leagues. I wouldn't mind playing for (a black head coach).

"(Willingham) is a good coach and Washington has always been a pretty good program. They weren't very good last year, but I think he can bring them back to being as good or better than they've been."

As far as official visits go, Hill has all but one of his set up. "I'm heading up to Washington for the Notre Dame game (9/24) with (McClymonds TE) Na Derris Ward," Hill said listing off his other official visits as well. "I'm also going to visit Oregon for the Oregon State game (11/19), Arizona for the Oregon game (10/22) and Cal on December 10th.

"I haven't scheduled my USC trip yet, but I plan on going to either the UCLA game or maybe a little after that. We'll have to see how things work out."

Hill will have a busy fall as he also plans to retake the SAT in October after scoring a 1250 (new version) on his first attempt.

McClymonds begins their season on September 16th against the Granada Matadors on the road.
