Pondexter talks about Washington commit

Huskies head coach Lorenzo Romar got some good news today. At a press conference held at his high school, San Joaquin (Fresno) HS wing Quincy Pondexter announced his intention to play his college ball for the University of Washington.

"I just committed to Washington," Pondexter told Dawgman.com following his well-attended press conference. "I told (the people in attendance) how comfortable I felt (at Washington). I liked how comfortable coach Romar and the staff made me feel there and I really appreciated that.

"(Romar) is like a father figure to me. He's such a cool guy and he just knows how to coach. I can already tell that."

Even though Pondexter announced his commitment Thursday afternoon, he told Romar his intentions on Monday when Romar was on his "in-home" visit.

"He was ecstatic," Pondexter said of Romar's reaction. "He was still a little mellow like he normally is, but just a little more excited.

"I made my decision when I got off the airplane (in Seattle). Coach Romar and his whole staff were there. That made me feel good how they treated me. Like a whole family."

Pondexter chose the Huskies over offers from Arizona, Memphis and Connecticut. He is a slasher, who has worked very hard this summer on his outside jumper shooting 500 in the morning and another 500 in the afternoon. Pondexter is very mature for his age and is ranked seventh among the small forwards in the entire nation.

"(The Huskies) are getting a hard worker," Pondexter said confidently. "I want to make the most out of the opportunities in front of me."

With Pondexter committed, Romar's attentions are now going to turn to PG Derrick Jasper who will be landing in Seattle at six o'clock tonight. Pondexter and Jasper played on the same AAU team this past summer and don't think for a second that Pondexter isn't going to be working his friend and teammate.

"I'm pretty much becoming a coach on the Washington staff right now," Pondexter said with a laugh. "I want to do everything in my power to get him to come to Washington with me."

Pondexter had a parting shot for Husky fans as well. "I just want everyone to know, that I'm happy to be a Husky."

So are Husky fans Quincy…so are Husky fans.
