Trip report: Anthony Atkins

No one was higher on the Huskies heading into this weekend than Compton DE Anthony Atkins. The 6-3, 255-pounder from southern California visited Washington this weekend and talked with Dawgman.com about his visit and where he is in the decision-making process.

"I need to wait a little bit," Atkins said just before he loaded on the plane to head back to Los Angeles. "I need to wait 24 hours and talk to my mom and dad about it. I loved the visit though.

"Dashon Goldson was my host on my visit. He showed me around and we saw the city. It was really, really great."

Atkins noted the Huskies are recruiting him at defensive end, but he doesn't care where he plays, so long as he's on the field.

"I can play anywhere the coaches want me to," Atkins said. "I love playing the game. I love hitting and I love making big plays. I like the idea of coming in here and rushing the quarterback."

So what was the highlight of the trip for Atkins?

"Meeting coach (Tyrone) Willingham was so great," Atkins said. "He just seems like a great man and someone who cares about you whether it's on or off the field. He wants you to become a man and seems like he demands a lot from you, but he also cares about you and wants you to be successful."

Making the trip with Atkins were teammates Ashlee Palmer and Brandon Johnson.

"I would say we're all pretty close to making a decision," Atkins said.

Even though Atkins didn't make a commitment to Washington, he said he loves the area, loves the program and loves the coaches. Keep an eye out for news on Atkins in the coming days.
