Trip report: Conan Amituanai

The call for a tight end has been made several times by the Husky faithful this recruiting season and the Huskies may have an "in" with a big one from California. Long Beach Poly TE/DE Conan Amituanai took a trip up to Seattle this past weekend to visit Washington and to see some familiar faces while he was in the Emerald City.

"Manu (Tuiasosopo) is my mother's cousin," Amituanai told Dawgman.com. "The last time I was up there was for Marques Tuiasosopo's graduation from the University of Washington and spending time with family."

Several people noted they saw Marques at the Washington – Washington State basketball game on Saturday night, one that was attended by most of the recruits and their hosts. Amituanai ran into his older cousin, but was tricked by the former Husky quarterback.

"I was just checking my messages on the phone and he just walked up to me like he was a stranger," Amituanai said with a laugh. "He just had his popcorn and he said ‘Hey bro can you hold this?' and so I held it for him and I looked and he was standing there with a smile and he was like ‘Hey man'. He tried to be all funny and stuff and it was pretty funny."

Amituanai played primarily at defensive end in high school, but would like to play tight end in college. Huskies tight ends coach Bob Simmons spent some time with the 6-4, 280-pounder on his visit and Amituanai came away impressed.

"I talked to coach Simmons for a while up there," Amituanai noted. "He just basically threw the whole playbook at me. I just got a chance to see how he coaches his players. He coaches his players like they're in the NFL and he puts his players through NFL drills and from what I've observed he's a pretty good coach."

Head coach Tyrone Willingham also made an impression on him.

"It was just a good conversation I had with (Willingham)," Amituani said. "Everything that he said is basically what I'm looking for in a coach. I just felt like he definitely knows what he's doing and I know the program is going to be on the rise again soon."

As far as visits and offers are concerned, Amituanai is almost finished. He has already taken a trip to Oregon (December 2nd) and California (December 16th) and will take his fourth and final visit to Arizona this coming weekend (January 13th). All four of the schools he's visited or plans on visiting, plus Utah have offered the big man from southern California.

So is there a leader right now?

"I'm still wide open for my decision," Amituanai said matter-of-factly. "Cal, Oregon and Washington are all up there for me. I enjoyed my trips while I was out there to all three and then I have one more trip left to Arizona then I will decide."

Look for Amituanai to make a decision the last week of January.
