Goethel getting close to a decision

If you've been observing football recruiting for very long, you know that some players make names for themselves late in the game and often schools start recruiting them late in the game. Vista (Ca.) LB Travis Goethel has seen an increase in interest from a couple Pac 10 schools recently and while he seemed close to a decision about two weeks ago, he has one more trip to take before a decision can be made.

"I'm taking a trip to ASU on (January 20th) and I've tripped to Washington, Utah and Oregon State," Goethel told Dawgman.com.

USC also contacted him recently and had intimated they wanted him to take a visit, but those plans appear to have fallen through.

"(USC) offered a trip," Goethel said. "I was supposed to go up there this weekend, but they never called me back all week until today. I had considered this weekend, but I wasn't sure about anything with them so I'm not going."

One reason for the increased attention was Goethel's performance during the Cali/Florida All-Star Game that was held on New Year's Eve. Goethel wowed those who attended the practices, but he said that he didn't think he played any better than he usually does.

"I just played the way I normally play," Goethel said humbly. "It didn't really matter where I was or what I was playing and I just played the way I normally play. It was a good experience and it was good to play against the best guys in California all week. The game sucked because we fumbled so much, but it was a fun time down there."

"It's pretty much down to Washington, Utah and ASU," Goethel said regarding who his favorites might be.

"I like (Utah's) football program," Goethel said of the Utes. "It's an up-and-coming program and their head coach is a pretty cool guy and everything."

As far as Washington is concerned, Goethel had great things to say about the Huskies.

"I loved the city of Seattle," Goethel said without hesitation. "It's was a nice play to be. All the guys were real cool and I think that's going to be an up-and-coming program too and they're going to get back to where they've been soon.

"I know a few guys who go (to Arizona State) and it's the one that's closest to home, it's only a five hour drive so that's nice. It's a nice school."

So with one final trip scheduled to visit Tempe, is a decision near?

"Probably after I get back from my ASU trip," Goethel said.

We'll have more from Goethel when he makes his final decision.
