Pope decommits

It's been a tough week for the Huskies in recruiting. Several rumors are out there that running back James Montgomery is ready to commit to California and this morning San Diego OL Cody Pope decided to decommit, after committing to Washington on January 8th and has decided to play his college football at Tennessee.

"I committed to (Tennessee) this morning," Pope said. "I called them this morning and told them I wanted to play for them and they were really stoked."

Pope had originally pledged to the Huskies following his official visit on January 8th and told Dawgman.com, "As far as I'm concerned I'm committed to Washington. The visit was excellent. I really enjoyed my time up there and so did both of my parents."

Pope's father really enjoyed the visit to Montlake claiming that, "My dad said that if Washington didn't get me that they certainly had him."

However that is little solace for the Huskies as Pope called Washington defensive coordinator Kent Baer to break the bad news.

"He was pretty pissed," Pope said and mentioned he wasn't sure if the Husky coaches were still coming down for an official visit this week. "I'm not sure if they are coming down because they were pretty pissed off."

So what was the deciding factor in Pope changing his mind?

"Tennessee is all about winning and tradition," Pope said. "They are usually about 10-2 seasons. They always seem to win 10 games. Washington, like seven or eight years ago, used to be about winning, but right now I just don't see that. It's been a while for them since they were winning."
