Wells proactive during recruiting process

Jeff Wells, a 6-3, 200 pound quarterback/safety prospect from Lakewood (Wash.) Lakes took his game down south recently to see how he measured up against some of the best competition on the west coast. He was kind enough to let us in on what he found out when he camped at both Arizona and Arizona State.

"When I boarded the plane in Seattle it was 60 degrees. When I got off the plane in Phoenix (at 8PM) it was 104!!!" Jeff told Dawgman.com earlier this week. "Both days the temperature was well over 105 degrees. That made it tough on the athletes.

"I was in Tuscon on Saturday (UA). Scott Pelluer, the recruiting coach for Arizona, was very accommodating. He gave me a personal red carpet 'golf cart tour' of the campus before the camp started. There were 17 QB's from all around the country. Most of them were my profile, ie, 6'2",195 lbs, etc.. Arizona also ran a little combine. They filmed my 5 step drop from three angles. This was followed by about 45 minutes of routes and passing w/ defense. The whole thing lasted from 5PM - 10PM.

"I got up at 7AM the next morning and attended the same type of thing at ASU. There were over 200 athletes from around the country twenty-five of them quarterbacks. The time of camp was 8AM - 12:30PM and then lunch was served at the team training table. ASU has just finished a $20 million dollar renovation to the football offices, study table, and dining facility.

"The ASU combine was tough for everyone with the 107 degree heat. It was performed all on soft damp grass. Not the best conditions, but it was the same for everyone. I spent time with QB's on offense and also spent some of the day with the safeties on defense. All in all, it was a fun trip."

Wells also updated us as to who tried to contact him during the May evaluation period. "During the month of May I was contacted by five D1 coaches," he said. "The colleges were Nevada, Washington, Arizona, Air Force, and Montana. Two others were unable to reach me because I was not home when they tried to call - they were Oregon and Idaho." He has no offers at this point in the process.

We will have an update on Jeff from the Eugene NIKE camp, being held this Saturday.
