Iweka talks about Husky commitment

The 2007 Husky recruiting class got off to an excellent start Monday afternoon as Rainier Beach DE Emeka Iweka became the earliest commitment ever to the Washington football program. Dawgman.com finally corralled the "big man from Beach" and he talked about his commitment to head coach Tyrone Willingham and his plans for basketball in he near future.

"It's a relief to make this decision," Iweka said during a break from class. "I took my mom and my uncle and coach Mike (Bethea) and we sat down and talked to coach (Willingham) about how well I'd fit and how he can help me.

"I'm excited to be a Husky and I just wanted to stay in town and play for the home team."

Iweka is a monster along the defensive line going 6-6 and 290 pounds and he says it's not just his size that sets him apart.

"I'm intimidating," Iweka said. "My strength is that I'm big and fast and at the same time quick on my feet. There's not a lot of guys my size as quick on their feet and as fast as me.

"I'm probably going to be at defensive end and I love going to get the quarterback or taking anyone down who has the ball."

He's only played two full seasons of football, but many feel his potential is unlimited on the gridiron. He mentioned he had been hearing from Oregon State – who he committed to as a 15-year old sophomore to play basketball – and a few other schools, but he said he's firm in his commitment to the Dawgs.

Iweka is also a standout on the basketball court, starting for the Vikings on the hardwood while also playing on the dominant AAU squad – Friends of Hoop – led by head coach Jim Marsh and PG Isaiah Thomas.

Will the agile big man be playing basketball this summer and walking on to Lorenzo Romar's squad when he's officially a Husky?

"Right now I don't know," Iweka said matter-of-factly. "I'm not talking about basketball right now. I'm just going to concentrate on football and basketball is secondary right now."

Quiet but still confident, Iweka had one more thing for the Husky faithful saying, "When I come there they'd better be ready for a show."

The gates to that show open officially in August 2007.
