Smith taking his time

Steve Smith is a 6-1, 185-pound receiver prospect from Reseda (Calif.) Woodland Hills-Taft, and recently ranked Smith as the number two receiver in the West Coast, behind Saint Bonaventure's Whitney Lewis. For all the attention Steve is receiving, he's remarkably calm about everything. We caught up with him for a quick update.

"I bring big plays to the table," Smith told "I can make a big catch, contribute to the team. I have a knack for the ball." He's also got some wheels, running a 10.8 100 meters. He currently benches 235 pounds.

Steve also plays basketball for Woodland Hills-Taft, but agrees that football is his ticket. "It's more exciting, more of an adrenaline rush," he said.

Lot of interest from a lot of schools. Florida, Florida State, Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, UCLA, USC, Washington, Texas, LSU, Tennessee, Notre Dame. I've been offered by all of those schools."

Steve reeled in 92 receptions for 1,612 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior, hence the hype. Even more impressive is Smith's 12 picks last year, tops in the LA area.

"It's kind of overwhelming," Steve said about the attention he's receiving. "I expected some of this, but not this much. I'm just taking it all in right now. I haven't really thought about it yet."

He doesn't know anybody at Washington and can't remember the Husky coaches that talked to him in May, but that doesn't mean the Dawgs are out of it at all. "I'm interested in both Washington and Washington State," Smith said. Top Stories
