DeMartinis enjoys visit to Northwest

The Huskies played host to a couple of big recruits from California this past weekend and the weather couldn't have been better. Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Ca.) OL Sam DeMartinis is a highly decorated line prospect and he and teammate Charlie Carmichael, along with their families, made their way north this past week to visit three college campuses and took in the Purple and Gold game at Husky Stadium.

"It was a great trip," DeMartinis told "We flew into Portland on Thursday and drove to Eugene. I really liked Oregon. Their facilities were great at (Eugene) is a real cool college town. It shuts down whenever there is a football game going on which is really cool. I also heard they have something like 45 straight sell-outs which is awesome.

"Their coaches were really great when we got to meet with them and talk with them. They are a school I could definitely see myself going to."

Following his visit with Ducks head coach Mike Bellotti, the recruits and their families drove up to Corvalis and stayed close to campus for the visit the next day with the Oregon State staff.

"We met the recruiting coordinator (Dan Van De Riet) and with the offensive line coach quickly," DeMartinis recalled. "Then we got a tour of the campus. It was beautiful. It's a somewhat smaller town, but still really nice.

"They took us on a tour of the stadium which they just had redone and it was really nice. Their luxury boxes are amazing. I've been to some before at the Staples Center and stuff like that, but these were really nice. Then we went and watched their practice and that was cool, but we didn't get to meet any of the coaches. That was surprising because they knew we were leaving, but that wasn't that big of a deal."

Friday the DeMartinis' and Carmichael's headed to Seattle to take in the sites around Montlake and attend the Husky spring game.

"It was really nice to see the area because I had never been (to Seattle) before," DeMartinis said. "We got in on Friday night and then early on Saturday we woke up and went to the campus. It was really cool because the weather was so nice. They told us it was supposed to rain, but I guess we brought the sun with us. It was almost perfect out there.

"We got to their offices and met with coach (Chris) Tormey, who is the recruiting coach for our area. He took us on a tour of the facilities and they were really nice. They showed us the weight room and the place where the players get to eat and stuff. That was really cool. The view is awesome.

"Then we met with the offensive line coach (Mike Denbrock) for about 30 minutes and then with coach (Tyrone) Willingham for about an hour. That had to be the highlight. Just talking to him and learning about the program and direction he wants it to go and what type of players he's looking for.

"At the game you could see the mountains and water. The setting was just unbelievable and you could see Mt. Rainier from certain places. It was just a really good visit and seeing it in person really made me like it a lot."

DeMartinis still sports the same seven offers he came to town with (Washington, Oregon, Ole Miss, UNLV, Clemson, Colorado and San Diego State) and said he plans to firm up which camps he's going to attend in the next few weeks. He plans to attend the USC and UCLA camps and says there is a chance he could make it to Washington for a day or two of their individual camp as well.

"All three visits were great, but I would say that Washington and Oregon were a little better," DeMartinis said. "Washington is a school I am definitely going to look at taking a visit to when the time comes."
