Helix athlete has list to choose from

Charles Smith Jr. is a 6-1, 175-pound athlete from Lemon Grove (Calif.) Helix, and while his teammate Reggie Bush is getting most of the national acclaim, Smith has generated some solid hype on his own. With 1st team all-county and all-league selections under his belt, Charles is ready to hunt for bigger and better game this fall.

"I just know the game so well," Charles told Dawmgan.com about what makes him a special player. "I've been playing it for so long, as long as I can remember. I just know what to expect out there. I have a knack for it. It comes natural to me."

Smith caught 28 passes for 511 yards and 12 touchdowns last season for Helix. Most of the colleges that are recruiting him think wide receiver is his spot and he would agree. He recently ran a 4.46 40 at his high school's team combine.

Offers have already been tendered by Oregon, Utah, Washington, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona, San Diego State and Wisconsin. "Oregon, Washington, Oklahoma, Arizona and San Diego State have been pressuring me the hardest lately," he said.

Smith was thinking about putting an early end to the process when things were first getting underway, but now he'll wait. "I want to research things," he said. "Honestly I thought I would commit early but I'll take my trips and then I'll know where I want to go."

Charles hasn't mapped out a plan for those visits, but did mention two schools he felt were shoe-ins. "Oregon and Washington, those two for sure and probably two others," he said. "I'm going on vacation to see family in Chicago. The coaches at Notre Dame want me to come down for an unofficial visit and I might do that. Northwestern too."
