James high on Huskies

Jamal James is a 5-foot-9, 175-pound cornerback/receiver prospect from Covina, Calif., and word around the Washington internet community Tuesday afternoon was that James had verbally committed to the Huskies. James is close, but needs to make at least one trip up north to confirm things.

Trent Miles is recruiting James for the Huskies, and the two spoke this afternoon. "He told me not to commit yet until I see the school and the campus and everything," James told Dawgman.com. "I'm going up there on August 5th (junior day)."

James' trip to Seattle will be his first ever to the Emerald City.

James is hearing from Washington, Arizona, Colorado and Oregon and currently has a verbal offer from the Huskies.

Last year for Covina, James had 21 catches for 521 yards on offense and 40 tackles and six interceptions on defense. When asked which position he prefers, he said he didn't care which side of the ball he plays on. The Huskies initially recruited James as a cornerback, but with the verbal commitment of Rainier Beach CB Vonzell McDowell, the Huskies will re-evaluate James as a receiver and return specialist.

James said that speed is the main thing that separates him from the rest of the pack. "I ran a 4.41 the other day and my 100 meters time is 10.7," he said. He also claims a 36-inch vertical jump, 275-pound bench press and 365-pound squat lift.

James considers another UW prospect, Baldwin Park's Aaron Harris, a good friend. Is there a good chance both friends could be putting on the purple and gold next year? Stay tuned...
