The 7-foot center is projected to be sidelined for two to four weeks, but a true timeline for his return won't be available until the day after the surgery at the earliest.
"This is obviously a setback for Spencer and our program," said Romar. "But, we are very optimistic based on what we have been told that he shouldn't be out for very long. It also helps that he was already in great condition."
Romar served as the head coach of the United States' team during last summer's FIBA Americas under-18 Championships. Hawes was a member of that team that won the gold medal in San Antonio, Texas.
"We spent time together in July with the USA team to where he learned a lot of the things we'll be going over during preseason practice," explained Romar. "So, he's already somewhat familiar with our system. We don't anticipate him being too far behind."
A McDonald's All-American, Hawes led Seattle Prep High School to the 2006 Washington state Class AAA state championship. He averaged 19.9 points and 11.3 rebounds as a senior and received the State Player of the Year award.
All-Star Sports labeled Hawes as the No. 2 high school player in the class of 2006, the top signee by any Pac-10 school. He was announced as the top prospect in the Best in the West poll of coaches and scouts conducted by the Long Beach Press-Telegram.
Hawes is the son of former Husky basketball player Jeff Hawes. His uncle, Steve Hawes, was a two-time All-American and Husky Hall of Fame inductee who played 10 seasons in the NBA.
The Huskies begin preparation for the 2006-07 season with their first official practice on Friday. The first game is Nov. 3, an exhibition contest against Saint Martin's.
