Horton gets Husky offer

After missing out on local prospect Kellen Kiilsgaard, the Huskies seemed to be content with taking only Ronnie Fouch from Redlands East Valley as a quarterback for the 2007 class, but another player has emerged as an athletic signal-caller the staff has their eyes on. Notre Dame ATH Shane Horton just got offered by Washington and he's scheduled a trip in January.

"Our quarterback went down early in the season," Horton told Dawgman.com. "I normally played wide receiver and safety, but when our quarterback went down I stepped in and we ran a little zone-option thing and I think we did pretty well."

On the season, Horton finished with 473 yards passing and eight touchdowns through the air, 636 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground and caught 36 passes for 635 yards and seven more touchdowns.

"I'm pretty versatile," Horton said understatedly. "I run the forty in 4.4 seconds and I can bench 315 so my strength numbers are pretty good.

"I played QB freshman year on the freshman team. I've always been the back up in case something happened. That's one of my strengths that I can play different positions. I just enjoy playing football, so whatever it is whether it's quarterback, wide receiver or safety I just want to help my team win."

Horton said he was recently offered by Washington, to go along with offers from UNLV, Utah State, Ohio and Wyoming, and he's got two visits scheduled for a couple of Pac 10 rivals.

"I'm going to Washington on the 5th of January and then Oregon (no offer) on the 19th," Horton said.

When asked if he was leaning in one direction or the other, Horton said one school is sticking out right now.

"I think Washington right now because they're my first Pac 10 offer," Horton said. "I have family that lives near Seattle. I also had a cousin that went to UW for a year and played football back in early 90's (Malik Horton).

"I'm going to take all my visits. I don't expect to decide early, but I like Washington a lot."

We'll have more from Horton following his official visit next month.
