Leslie may make early decision

It's no secret that Washington is scouring the west coast to find talented players for their secondary. One players who seems to have piqued the Husky coaching staff's interest is Edison (Fresno) DB Brandon Leslie and Dawgman.com was able to see him up-close at the Scout Combine held in Los Angeles this past weekend. Leslie talked about several subjects, including what he thinks he does best.

"I can play free safety or cornerback, but free safety is what I do best," Leslie said while nursing a sore hamstring along the sidelines of the Home Depot center on Sunday. "My instincts and break on the ball are really what sets me apart from the other guys.

"I can play in the box as a corner and man up or I can play in the hole at free safety. I could play strong safety too, but I feel I'm better at free safety in center field."

Leslie is hearing from several schools right now and claims six offers from the likes of Georgia Tech, Nebraska, Washington, Arizona, San Jose State, Air Force.

"My top five is Georgia Tech, Nebraska, Washington, Arizona and Notre Dame," Leslie said. "Notre Dame hasn't offered yet, but they are definitely a school I like a lot."

This week, Washington will be in at Leslie's school and he already feels has a good relationship with the Husky coaching staff.

"Coach (Chris) Tormey is the one recruiting me, but J.D. (Williams) and I have known each other for a while," Leslie said. "They show me a lot of love, they send hand-written things all the time and they really show me how much they want me to come and play up there.

"Washington is a school I've had my eye on for a while and with coach J.D. there that really makes them stick out. I would love to play for him."

So is Leslie close to a decision?

"Well I've thought about that a lot and I had planned on making a decision in July, but if I have to wait for a school to offer me then I can do that too," Leslie said. "Some schools have said they wanted to see a couple of games this fall before they offer me so I may wait to take some visits, but right now I'd like to decide in summer sometime so I don't have to worry about it."

Leslie said he's already thought about the criteria he'll use to make his final choice.

"Academics is big for me and my family," Leslie said. "I have a 3.3 (gpa) right now and I think I can get that higher, because football doesn't always work out and you have to plan for life after football.

"Distance and weather aren't that big of a deal, because I can get used to that, but I have to have a great relationship with the head coach, my position coach and the defensive coordinator.

"Those three coaches are very important in where I finally decide to go."

Leslie plans to attend the Stanford Nike camp on May 19th and said he probably won't attend any camps except for his team camp this summer.

We'll have more from Leslie as the May evaluation period moves forward.
