Huskies Shutout Stanford

Lawrie threw a three hitter for her second straight shutout and Charters broke a scoreless tie with a grand slam to give the Huskies a 7-0 win over the Cardinal at Husky Softball Stadium.

The Huskies capitalized on two of five hit batters by Cardinal starter Missy Penna to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth. With one out Lawrie got hit by a pitch and Watson singled. With two outs Moojen also got hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Charters came to the plate and got ahead of Penna in the count 2-1, then just barely drove the next pitch from Penna into the first row of the center field bleachers for her sixth home run and first career grand slam.

The Huskies made it 7-0 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Lastrapes got hit by a pitch from Penna leading off and Tyson walked. Becky McCullough entered the game in relief of Penna and struck out Greer, but then balked Lastrapes and pinch runner Sheila Reiten up a base. After Lawrie walked to load the bases, Watson grounded into a fielder's choice to score Lastrapes and make it 5-0. Matthews grounded a single to center to plate Reiten and make it 6-0. With the bases still loaded McCullough drilled Moojen in the back with a pitch, forcing home pinch runner Bailey Stenson with the final run.

With her ninth shutout of the season Lawrie upped her record to 22-8. She walked one and struck out 11. For Stanford Penna dropped to 22-8. She gave up six runs, all earned, on three hits and four walks in four innings. She struck out six.

With their victories over Stanford and California this weekend the Huskies won the season series against both teams two games to one. They now travel to Arizona to complete the regular season, facing Arizona State in a single game in Tempe on Thursday, May 10 and Arizona in a two game series on Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12. On Sunday, May 13 the NCAA will announce the field for the NCAA Tournament on ESPNews at 3 p.m. The Huskies hope to host regionals the weekend of May 18-20. Top Stories
