Cross an answer at tight end?

Garrett Cross is a 6-5, 225-pound tight end prospect from Butte College in Oroville, California, and with Kevin Ware graduating after this season there's going to be a need for some experience at tight end and Cross just might fit the bill. It happens to be a very good year for solid TE prospects in the JC ranks.

Garrett is originally from Chico, California. "I wanted to go to a good football JC and they have one in town here," he told And I know Coach (Craig) Rigsbee and it was a good situation." Cross earned All-Conference last year. He started originally as a receiver then moved to TE when conference play started.

His 40 time? 4.6. "That's not recent," Garrett said. "I've done a lot of work over the summer, so I could be around 4.5."

Butte has given Cross an opportunity he didn't get in high school. "Oregon State and Oregon were kind of interested in high school but nothing came through," he said. "I didn't have a very good senior season and our team was horrible. And my coach did nothing for me."

But college coaches have made their way to Oroville and Cross is a big reason why. "It's my athleticism and speed as a tight end," he said, relaying the feedback he's gotten from scouts. "A lot of schools are now looking for tight ends that can really run and catch the ball. I've got some size, but I'm going to get bigger. And Washington, for instance, said they liked my blocking."

Wherever Cross goes, he'll have three years to complete two years of eligibility. "It's mainly Pac-10 right now," Garrett said of the schools that have expressed the most interest. "Washington, Oregon and Oregon State. Coach Rigsbee gets a lot of calls but he doesn't tell me about them. I talked to Chuck Heater. We've been talking back and forth. He came and watched our opening game last Saturday. I didn't get a chance to talk to him then."

It's apparent the Huskies are looking hard at Cross, and the feeling is mutual. "I don't know anybody there, but I do have some family up in Whidbey Island," he said. "I've been to Seattle a few times. I like it up there."
