Wheat separates himself from chaff

Anthony Wheat is a 6-1, 205-pound safety prospect from Compton (Calif.) Dominguez, and the lead Don is doing things a little different this year. As Dominguez' top athlete, Wheat has taken the reins as quarterback, although that won't be the position he plays in college.

Anthony is mostly being recruited as a free safety, but is enjoying the opportunity to play quarterback. "It's fun," he told Dawgman.com. You get to control the offense, so that's cool." Wheat runs a 4.6 40 and benches 305 pounds.

So what are Wheat's strengths as a player? "I'm easy to coach," he said. "I learn fast. I'm a good athlete."

Anthony loves to play safety. "I get to run around, see everything and get in some good shots," he said.

The most contact lately has been initiated by Washington, Illinois, Arizona and USC, and Wheat currently has offers from Illinois, Arizona and Michigan State. His top-5 is USC, Arizona, Illinois, Washington and Oregon, and he doesn't have any trips set up yet.

The Huskies didn't mess around with Anthony, letting the head coach take charge. "I talked to Coach Neuheisel," he said. "He told me that he was really interested and that he wants me to take a trip, but I don't know yet."

Anthony has a tie to Washington. He knows Sam Cunningham through Sam's little brother Eugene, who is a senior at Dominguez.
