Washington offers Lyon

Washington is definitely looking for a tight end next year to take up where Kevin Ware is looking to leave off. Jon Lyon is a 6-6, 251-pound tight end prospect from Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, California, and the Huskies have shown their interest in his abilities. They have offered Lyon a scholarship to play football.

"Washington a lot, Florida, USC, Kentucky, Rutgers, Kansas and Kansas State," Lyon told Dawgman.com about the schools that have been contacting him the most. Washington is his only offer so far. "It's really blown up since last year but I'm not surprised," he said.

Jon didn't go to Saddleback right out of high school. "I sat out a year, kind of like a grayshirt year," he said. Lyon graduated from Carmel High School in Carmel, California in 2000. He didn't get too much attention as a prepster. "Schools like Fresno State and Idaho recruited me."

Lyon didn't go through any sort of process when determining if Saddleback was the place for him. "I had a friend who played baseball for Saddleback, so I came down," he said. Last year as a freshman he split time at tight end, and ended up only catching one pass, but he's already hauled in 12 catches so far through 3 games. "I'm definitely a pass-catching tight end but I can do both," he said about his blocking. "Coaches say I have good speed and good hands."

At the most-recent JCfootball combine, Lyon ran a smoking 4.58 in the 40. He did one-hundredth better running with his team over the summer. Jon will be a December graduate, with 2 years to play 2.

Who has been contacting Lyon for the Huskies? "Coach (Brent) Myers and Coach (Rick) Neuheisel," he said. "They want me to come up there, take a trip. They said they are looking for a junior-college tight end who can come in and start for them next year."

Jon was appreciative of the offer extended by the Dawgs, but isn't ready to jump in the boat right away. "I told him I needed to talk to my family about it and that I wanted to keep my options open right now," he said. He'll be visiting Washington in December near or after his season is over.
