Vickers taking his time

BJ Vickers is a 6-3, 207-pound athlete from Venice, California, and right now Vickers is concentrating on one thing - taking care of business for the Gondoliers. They just lost a heartbreaker to Santa Monica a week ago, and BJ is going to make sure he leaves it all on the field before worrying about anything else.

"We should beat everybody else," he told "Maybe Westchester. That should be a good game." As you would expect, Vickers is playing a lot of receiver, but he's also being used by the Venice coaches as a tailback. "I run sweeps and through the middle sometimes."

As for recruiting attention, Michigan State, Washington, Washington State, Tennessee and Texas have been the schools hot on his trail. All have offered. He hasn't set up any official visit dates, but is formulating a short list in his mind. "Michigan State, Washington..probably Oregon too. That's it so far, but I know there are others I want to look at."

So why the interest in the Spartans? "They are a passing school and I have a good chance of playing there my first year," he said.

And the Huskies? "They are good people," BJ said of the Washington coaches recruiting him - Bobby Kennedy and Rick Neuheisel. "I've known Coach Bobby since 10th grade, since he was recruiting me for Arizona. We're pretty close. He tells me he wants me out there. He says they need a player like me to come in because they are losing a lot of receivers. I've always liked Washington. They have always been one of my top schools. I've always watched them all the time on TV. I like Reggie Williams a lot too."

But all the recruting stuff is taking a back seat for the time being. "I'm just going ahead, going through my senior and seeing what comes," said Vickers. "I'm enjoying my senior year, and I'm enjoying the recruiting process. I'm not in a rush. I'm focusing on my grades." Top Stories
