Helix' Smith changing it up

Charles Smith is a 6-0, 175-pound athlete from San Diego (Calif.) Helix and Charles has been asked to do something new to help Helix toward their ultimate goal - a CIF championship. It's not an unfamiliar spot, and Smith is always eager to do whatever it takes to achieve greatness.

"My sophomore year I was the backup QB and before high school I was a quarterback, so my coach knew I could play it," Smith told Dawgman.com Thursday night about his switch from wide receiver. "It's working out pretty good. We're doing some option and we're spreading it around a little bit more."

Helix is 5-1, with their only loss coming at the hands of Vista. "They are a good team," Charles said. If it wasn't enough learning the playbook from a different position, but Smith is also having to work through the normal bumps and bruises you have going through a tough football season. "I had strained quad muscle, but I'm playing through it. It's not that bad."

Off the field, Charles has lightened his load considerably. He's taken teams like Oklahoma, Michigan, Northwestern off his final list. "I'm just not interested in going that far," he said. Three teams that have made the final cut include the Washington Huskies, Oregon Ducks and Arizona Wildcats, all of whom have offered.

"I haven't set up anything officially yet, but I have a tentative date for Washington the weekend of January 10th and a tentative date of December 6th for Arizona," Smith said. "I'm also going to set up a trip to Oregon. I think those are the only three trips I'm going to take. I'm favoring Oregon and Washington right now over Arizona. Those two schools are the one I want to go to and I think I'll know after my trips which one I'll want to go to. I'm pretty sure it's going to come down to those two."

Here are Smith's thoughts on his top-2.
Washington - "I like their system and I enjoy talking to Coach (Rick) Neuheisel and Coach (Brent) Myers. I know a couple of their players up there. Scott White, Stanley Daniels and Khalif Barnes."

Oregon - "They are another school that I've enjoyed watching. I enjoy talking to their coaches too."
