Rankin racking up numbers

Louis Rankin is a 6-1, 190-pound athlete from Stockton (Calif.) Lincoln, and Rankin first made a splash on the recruiting scene when he ran a 4.36 40 at this spring's NIKE camp at Stanford. Since then, Louis has done nothing to dispell the thought that he could be a real factor at the D1 level. His numbers are bearing that out.

Rankin has run for 1055 yards and 19 touchdowns so far this year in 5 games for Lincoln. "I'm not playing that much on defense," he told Dawgman.com last night. "I thought I would be playing both ways." Louis has bettered his NIKE 40 time, running an apparent 4.29 hand-held 40 two days ago.

But when it comes to interest from schools, it's not necessarily his size and speed that have coaches' attention. "I think it's just that I have more desire out there than anybody else," he said. "I like to get everyone excited."

Recruiting contact has been steady. Washington, Washington State, Boise State, Fresno State, Oregon, Oregon State and California. Offers have been tendered by Boise State, Oregon State, Washington and Fresno State.

Rankin also has two official trips set up. He'll be at Fresno State the weekend of December 6th and Washington the weekend of December 20th. "Chuck Heater calls me and talks to me," he said of the Huskies' running backs coach and recruiting coordinator. "Coach (Rick) Neuheisel talked to my uncle and offered me through him. They like me as an athlete. I don't care where I play. I just want to play. Wherever I can get on the field soonest. It could be at center." (laughs)

Louis is in no hurry to reach a decision. "I'm going to wait it out," he said. He is taking the SAT the weekend of November 2nd.
