Dawgs and Cats in battle for Goodman?

Jason Goodman is a 6-5, 245-pound TE/LB prospect from Great Falls (Mont.) CM Russell, and the Rustlers have their biggest game of the season coming up Friday night - a playoff grudge match with cross-city rivals Great Falls High. CM Russell is 8-1 so far this season, and they owe a lot of their success to the big man that starts on both sides of the ball.

"There should be 8 to 10 thousand people there," Goodman told Dawgman.com Thursday night. "It's one of the biggest games around here in recent memory." So far Jason has 22 catches for 3 touchdowns and two 2-point conversions on offense and is averaging around 8-10 tackles a game on defense.

"I'm starting both ways," he said. "I've improved my blocking and I'm making great strides on defense. I really didn't play much D last year. Schools are mostly recruiting me on offense, but some coaches have talked about if it doesn't work out on offense that I have good enough athleticism to play defense."

One of those schools happens to be Washington. Goodman just had a conversation with UW secondary coach Bobby Hauck. "In fact, he was actually one of the coaches that has been talking to me about possibly playing some defense," Jason said of Hauck. "They are recruiting me as a tight end, but they said the films show that I could have a future on defense and were wondering if I was willing to maybe give it a try. I just want to play."

Contact has been steady from Washington, Missouri, Colorado State, Arizona, Montana, Montana State and Wyoming. "I just set up my first visit tonight (Thursday)," Goodman said. "It's with Washington. I'll be visiting Seattle the weekend of December 6." While he has offers from the Grizzlies, Bobcats and Cowboys, it's the other four that Goodman feels best about right now. Here are his thoughts on each of his favorites.

Missouri - "Andy Hill is the one recruiting me and I know they like to throw the ball. They have a young team that's exciting to watch and the coaches are just starting to turn things around. I know they get the tight end the ball."

Colorado State - "Mick Delaney and Sonny Lubick are from Montana. Coach Delaney actually coached at Great Falls High back in the 70's and knows my Dad. They call me every week."

Arizona - "I went down there this summer for their camp and really liked it. I like Coach Mackovic and Coach Ianello. They are fairly new too and are really upbeat about turning things around there."

Washington - "Well, when I went out there in May I had a blast. My cousin and I snuck into Husky Stadium and was shocked. I had never seen anything so big in my life. Looking at it, it just looked like a place I could see myself playing at in the future. And talking to the coaches was awesome. Watching the spring game, I was able to see how much they throw to the tight end."

And if he had to choose today? "Right now I'd say it's too close to call between Washington and Missouri," he said. "That's right now."

Goodman's other official visits will have to compete with his hoops schedule, not an easy thing. "I'm not sure when my other visits will be," he said. "I'm also playing basketball and don't want to miss too many games but I also know that football is going to be paying my way. I just want to make sure I can help win a fourth straight state title."

Goodman has been all-state in hoops the last two years for CM Russell.
