Green ready to tackle Taft

Chad Green is a 6-0, 175-pound athlete from Van Nuys (Calif.) Birmingham, and the Patriots have a tough task ahead of them this Friday. They take on Taft, and their numerous D1 athletes. Green, in particular, will have his hands full with one of the top receivers in the country. He feels he's up to the task.

"He's very good, a good athlete," Chad told when asked about Taft's quarterback, Cary Dove, who is set to attend California next year. "And Steve Smith. I belive he's the number-two recruit in the nation. He can play both sides of the ball very well."

Smith is Green's responsibility. "To me, I just think of it like covering another receiver, but he has more skill than most guys," he said. "You have to bring your 'A' game when you play against Steve. I just have to play my game and keep my head in it. If he catches a deep ball and scores I have to put it behind me. It's just one play at a time."

Chad has been pretty lethal offensively in his own right. He has 27 catches for 800 yards and 10 touchdowns. Defensively, he has 2 interceptions and a blocked punt.

On the recruiting front, Green is almost done setting up the last of his official visits. "I took an official trip to Oregon State in September and I liked that," he said. "And I have a couple trips set up in December to Washington (12/6) and Oregon (12/13). I'll be visiting LSU (11/23) in late November." He wants to take a fifth trip, but that one is open.

His list of current scholarship offers is long and illustrious - LSU, Washington, Washington State, Arizona State, Arizona, Oregon, Oregon State, Kansas and California.

Chad isn't listing a favorite right now, but he did give us an idea about the other three schools he's visiting.

Washington - "Just the program. Coach (Rick) Neuheisel is a very nice guy. The coaching staff seems to be a solid staff and the program has been a winning one for as long as I can remember. It's a pretty good program and it seems like it's in a good area too. I know they aren't having the greatest season right now, but you can't win them all. Coach Axman mainly calls me, but I talk to Coach Neuheisel too. They say how they are excited to recruit me and how they know I'm a good athlete. They talk to me about the program, the school, the academics...things of that nature.""

Oregon - "They are another winning program and Coach (Mike) Bellotti has done a lot for that program. They have a lot of good guys come out of that school. It seems to be well-rounded and disciplined up there."

LSU - "Actually LSU has a good defense. They are recruiting me mainly as a defensive back, I believe. I've enjoyed their defense. And to play defense in the SEC is a good thing. And Coach Saban has been doing good there. I know that it's a long ways from home but I believe that if I went there or got that experience it would be good for me. And the school has a lot to offer with the programs and their majors and the size of their school."
