Week 1: Coaching Candidates Approval Ratings

Each week of Washington's search to bring in a new head football coach, we'll be crunching the numbers generated by our polls on each candidate profiled on Dawgman.com's premium football board. We'll also provide a sampling of reader opinion on each candidate. So who is hot, and who is not? Read on!

Our non-scientific college of public-opinion works like this: Dawgman subscribers were polled to rate each candidate on a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest. Any coach that receives a rating of over 4 is considered a 'hot' coaching prospect by the users. Any coach that receives a rating under 3 is not considered a viable coaching candidate. Think of it as your own recruiting guide to coaches, where you get to determine their star value!

So here are the results after polling Dawgman.com users for one week! We will post additional updates until a decision is announced.

JIM MORA
Approval Rating (votes): 4.62 (241) ↓ Down 27% from last week.

What they are saying: "My gut says Mora wants this job. My gut says he can get out of his Seahawks deal but that UW doesn't want to tick Paul Allen off. If Allen is cool about Mora coming to the Dub, then I think he will. The Seahawks are in rebuilding mode and not a great time to be their head coach."

NICK SABAN
Approval Rating (votes): 4.6 (87) ↑ Up 24.8% from last week.

What they are saying: "Saban's 2nd year = #1 ranking. Rebuilding does not need to take years. Let's go out and get ourselves a football coach…"

GARY PINKEL
Approval Rating (votes): 4.19 (134) ↑ Up 5.4% from last week.

What they are saying: "I think when Pinkel is hired, there will be a rejoicing and a feeling of 'we are back' in the people it matters with. No one is going to get the stadium built over night. He's a good bet on this score, though."

JEFF TEDFORD
Approval Rating (votes): 4.14 (86) ↓ Down 27.6% from last week.

What they are saying: "I like the idea of Tedford, but would he be able to recruit the way he has at Cal? At Cal he has been able to use the JC kids to fill holes quickly. The current situation at the UW is not as easy to get those kinds of kids. But I think that if not Mora and don't think that he will walk away from the Hawks, then you go and talk with Tedford and see what he has to say."

CHRIS PETERSEN
Approval Rating (votes): 4.01 (134) ↑ Up 12.5% from last week.

What they are saying: "We take our team to their team camp in Boise. Peterson is a class act, a good coach, and will bring in the recruits."

WILL MUSCHAMP
Approval Rating (votes): 4.01 (115) ↑ Up 51.7% from last week.

What they are saying: "The coach I would love to see us get would be Will Muschamp. Yes, you can say that we need a proven HEAD coach and what not but the fact is the guy is a hell of a coach and he has done it at the big name programs under some great coaches and he has also done it in the NFL. The passion and fire he brings is unmatched and if he will coach the defense you will see a massive improvement in third down defense and overall defense."

GARY PATTERSON
Approval Rating (votes): 3.96 (73) ↑ Up 12.6% from last week.

What they are saying: "I dont know if he would be a fan of here or not. In my opinion you cant pass up a great coach just because you think they may leave in 4 or 5 years. The time to win is now not later. And Heck, you never know, he may love it here and want to stay forever. Look at Grobe at Wake, he turned down Arkansas. Look at Stoops at OU, he turned down Florida, Miles turned down his alma mater at Michigan. If Patterson turns us into a powerhouse who is to stay he wouldnt rather be here than anywhere else in the country?"

TODD GRAHAM
Approval Rating (votes): 3.73 (86) ↑ Up 31.7% from last week.

What they are saying: "I like Todd Graham too, but I get the feeling that he would be another Bobby Petrino. The guy likes to move around, it seems and always looking for the next great opportunity. He went to Rice, and then after one season, he went to Tulsa. He has won and elevated everyone of his teams that he coached."

BUTCH DAVIS
Approval Rating (votes): 3.68 (79) ↓ Down 5.1% from last week.

What they are saying: "How about Ray Lewis, Sean Taylor, Ed Reed, Mike Rumph, J. Vilma, D.J. Williams, Antrel Rolle, Kelly Jenkins, Phillip Buchanon? And thats just the 'D'."

MIKE RILEY
Approval Rating (votes): 3.67 (70) ↑ Up 4.9% from last week.

What they are saying: "He's got a very good thing going there, and he is a Corvallis native. He really is a perfect fit for OSU, in so many ways. I don't see him leaving, even for much more money."

BRIAN KELLY
Approval Rating (votes): 3.67 (67) ↓ Down 0.5% from last week.

What they are saying: "This guy has a Don James-like resume, stresses defense and has won everywhere he's been. He's won titles in D-2, been a head coach at two D-1 schools AND he's young enough to be our coach for a long time, unlike Pinkel or some of the others."

JIM HARBAUGH
Approval Rating (votes): 3.56 (70) ↓ Down 30.2% from last week.

What they are saying: "Simply he is a winner, he went straight from the NFL on the San Diego chargers, to coaching at USD and turned their div 1AA into a championship program before going to stanford where he is transforming a 1-11 team with little talent into a contender."

MIKE LEACH
Approval Rating (votes): 3.26 (78) ↑ Up 23.3% from last week.

What they are saying: "Looking over Texas Tech's past five recruiting classes I noticed that the Huskies have had higher rated classes (on average star ranking) four of the past five years than Tech, but Leach is winning in a tough conference. He is developing his players to his system and his system works."

BRONCO MENDENHALL
Approval Rating (votes): 3.21 (58) ↑ Up 30.3% from last week.

What they are saying: "He is probably a great recruiter, but he is All-BYU. He's an alum and he loves it out there. I think it would be incredibly difficult to pull him away from BYU. I don't think he's going anywhere. He's at his dream job already."

DAVE CHRISTENSEN
Approval Rating (votes): 3.13 (78) ↑ Up 25.6% from last week.

What they are saying: "He just strikes me as a guy who is itching for an opportunity and will really blow people away with his preparation. Imagine teams trying to stop Jake Locker running the Missouri spread. I don't think Pinkel will come, but I think Dave Christensen is a better long term solution. He has even written a book about coaching Offensive linemen. When all the dust clears he is the best fit for UW."

PAT HILL
Approval Rating (votes): 3.01 (121) ↑ Up 6% from last week.

What they are saying: "He's built that (Fresno State) program up and he would bring enthusiasm, passion and experience to this program. Also, his handicap in recruiting is SIGNIFICANT."

Click here to post what you have to say about Pat Hill.

KYLE WHITTINGHAM
Approval Rating (votes): 2.86 (66) ↑ Up 51% from last week.

What they are saying: "Utah will renegotiate his contract at year end and KW will stay. He is loaded at Utah with talent, facilities and that is his home. In his 4th year as a HC, he continues to improve and would be a great hire for UW, just doubt it happens. Utah has the formula for making it to the BCS already so going to the PAC-10 may not be a need for him. If he goes someday, I suspect it will be to the Big-12 or SEC."

DAN HAWKINS
Approval Rating (votes): 2.8 (61) ↑ Up 5.1% from last week.

What they are saying: "I live in Denver. The local media is getting a little "miffed" with Mr. Hawkins. First, they aren't very happy about him installing his son as QB last year. But he did OK as a frosh, so they went with it. Now, things aren't happening as quickly as Buff fans would like. There has been a recent QB change, but fans still aren't pleased with the offense."

LANE KIFFIN
Approval Rating (votes): 2.8 (117) ↑ Up 3.9% from last week.

What they are saying: "While I agree that if he steps in and has great success, then he may be use as a stepping stone for his next job. Well to be perfectly honest, with the state of the program where it is now, I would consider him our savior if he stepped in and turned this thing around in five years and brought us back to competing for championships...even if he left after those five years."

BRENT VENABLES
Approval Rating (votes): 2.75 (57) ↑ Up 10.9% from last week.

What they are saying: "Could be a good candidate - young, energetic, good recruiter, comes from the defensive side of the ball, and learned from a top coach at a perennial power known for tough, physical football. On the surface, it could make a lot of sense."

Click here to post what you have to say about Brent Venables.

DEWAYNE WALKER
Approval Rating (votes): 2.52 (62) ↑ Up 33.2% from last week.

What they are saying: "I'm sorry, I just don't see DeWayne Walker getting a head coaching job at a major college this year. Does his resume hold up? I've been disappointed in the defense this year, and Walker is still living off his defense's performance in the 13-9 game. BYU humiliated UCLA after his defense performed well against them in the LV Bowl. I don't want Walker to leave UCLA, but I don't think he's a hot coaching candidate."

BOBBY HAUCK
Approval Rating (votes): 2.35 (77) ↑ Up 19.3% from last week.

What they are saying: "This guy is interesting. Coach Neu(heisel) connection should be a good thing since he actually has a Rose Bowl win."

Click here to post what you have to say about Bobby Hauck.

MIKE TICE
Approval Rating (votes): 2.22 (64) ↑ Up 39.2% from last week.

What they are saying: "I think he was a better coach than most gave him credit for, especially that (last) year. He had improved from his first year to his last. He did that without a full coaching staff and he was the lowest paid head coach in the league (NFL)."

Click here to post what you have to say about Mike Tice.

BOB GREGORY
Approval Rating (votes): 1.93 (57) ↑ Up 21.9% from last week.

What they are saying: "As an ardent Gregory hater, I have to give credit where it is due and say he has overseen a fairly good defense this year. After finishing last in sacks and TFLs in 2007, Cal is in the Top 3 of the Pac-10 and Top 25 nationally in almost every meaningful defensive category."
