Applewhite taking trips?

Antwan Applewhite is a 6-3, 220-pound defensive end prospect from Harbor City (Calif.) Narbonne and Antwan made his college decision nearly two months ago when he verbally comitted to the San Diego State Aztecs. Or did he? In talking to Antwan last night, he made it clear that he's still taking visits and that there's one school he's still looking at for an offer. That school? The University of Washington.

"I'll have to see on my visit," Applewhite told about his interest in the Huskies. "I think they are interested in offering me and if they did I probably would go to Washington."

That's quite a switch from where he was a couple of months ago. Cornell Jackson has been in contact with Antwan during the whole recruiting process, and Applewhite feels comfortable with the Washington linebackers coach. "He says good things to me," Antwan said of Jackson. "He said they are interested in me. I love the way he recruits and the way he talks to you. He's on your level and understands what's going on."

And there's someone else with Dawg ties that is calling Applewhite. "I talked to Dashon (Goldson) the other day. He said he wants me to go to Washington." Antwan also mentioned that Dashon will be going back to Washington when he graduates with his AA, according to Goldson.

Antwan will be hearing from SDSU this weekend, as he'll be taking his official visit, but he also set he's very close to setting up trips with both Washington and Washington State. The Aztecs and Cougars have offered scholarships. It's easy to see why WSU would want Applewhite. He fits DC Bill Doba's prototype for a smaller, lightning-quick DE. He runs a 4.5 40, benches 275 pounds and squats 365 pounds.

And Antwan loves playing defense. "You know what you have to do," he said. "Get the ball or get whoever's got the ball and you go out and do it." And he did that very well for the Gauchos this year, racking up 22.5 sacks and 90 tackles on D. Offensively, he had 15 catches for 375 yards and a score.
