Week 2: Coaching Candidates Approval Ratings

Each week of Washington's search to bring in a new head football coach, we'll be crunching the numbers generated by our polls on each candidate profiled on Dawgman.com's premium football board. We'll also provide a sampling of reader opinion on each candidate. So who is hot, and who is not? Read on!

Our non-scientific college of public-opinion works like this: Dawgman subscribers were polled to rate each candidate on a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest. Any coach that receives a rating of over 4 is considered a 'hot' coaching prospect by the users. Any coach that receives a rating under 3 is not considered a viable coaching candidate. Think of it as your own recruiting guide to coaches, where you get to determine their star value!

So here are the results after polling Dawgman.com users in the two weeks since the announcement was made week! We will post additional updates until a decision is announced.

JIM MORA
Approval Rating (votes): 4.59 (267) ↓ Down 6% from last week.

What they are saying: "My gut says he can get out of his Seahawks deal but that UW doesn't want to tick Paul Allen off. If Allen is cool about Mora coming to the Dub, then I think he will. The Seahawks are in rebuilding mode and not a great time to be their head coach."

NICK SABAN
Approval Rating (votes): 4.54 (101) ↓ Down 10.6% from last week.

What they are saying: "I've always felt he was a phenomenal coach. He's just a complete prick. I still root for him though. Rooted for him at LSU and I like watching him at Bama now. "Don't know why but I pull for him."

GARY PINKEL
Approval Rating (votes): 4.2 (152) ↑ Up 3.5% from last week.

What they are saying: "He was no great shakes as our OC here, rather put together a boring offense. He seemed like he was sleepwalking. I can't figure out why so many fans are thinking he is so great -- especially with something like a $2 million dollar buyout. Frustration with him would set in quickly. Remember Don James said glowing things about Gilby also."

JEFF TEDFORD
Approval Rating (votes): 4.13 (101) ↓ Down 2.2% from last week.

What they are saying: "Why is Coach Tedford considered a QB guru? I know that some of his kids have gone to the League but they are average at best. I know Dilfer won a ring but he will tell you that at his best he was simply a game manager. Boller: yeah right. Carr: disappointment. Rodgers: too early to tell but definitely looks like he could be outstanding."

GARY PATTERSON
Approval Rating (votes): 4.07 (97) ↑ Up 22.7% from last week.

What they are saying: "I'm also on the Patterson fan list. He is a proven winner, much like Paul Johnson. Might not be the flashiest candidate, but results are much more important to me than style. Also, his defenses are flat out nasty."

WILL MUSCHAMP
Approval Rating (votes): 4.05 (145) ↑ Up 7.9% from last week.

What they are saying: "If a change needed to be made, it wouldn't make much sense to hire another "proven head coach" when we already have one of those. Whether or not you agree with it (i don't necessarily) there is some logic in changing to a young coach that would bring a lot of new, or renewed, energy to the program. Muschamp fits that bill."

CHRIS PETERSEN
Approval Rating (votes): 3.9 (153) ↓ Down 22.4% from last week.

What they are saying: "While Petersen motivates entirely different than Hawkins did, I'd have to say that Pete's type of motivation doesn't wear itself out in time. He seems to motivate more from a personal level. His motivation seems to stem from honestly and actually caring about each young man, doing an excellent job of teaching them and then "loving them up" and inspiring them to be the best they can be."

BUTCH DAVIS
Approval Rating (votes): 3.74 (94) ↑ Up 12.2% from last week.

What they are saying: "Butch is 57 and a cancer survivor, in 2 yrs he will be the BOSS of the ACC.. not the greatest of accomplishments, but secure..i think he has done the vagabond bit..Chapel Hill is a lovely small town to live in.. close to the beach and the mtns...and the fan base is good and wealthy ... it is a great place to work toward retirement.. plus he just brought in a very good class and has another on the way.. as you may have noticed he is attracting top talent to visit."

TODD GRAHAM
Approval Rating (votes): 3.73 (106) ↓ Down 1.2% from last week.

What they are saying: "Todd is an awesome coach. I have watched several Tulsa games in the last couple of years. They do the "freeze play", have the rugby punt, run an incredible spread option, have great fake kicks, and a good defense."

BRIAN KELLY
Approval Rating (votes): 3.68 (82) ↑ Up 2.3% from last week.

What they are saying: "Kelly is happy in Cincy and heard from a close source that he has already told the team that he is going nowhere and that he, his wife and kids love livng in the city and they love the university. UC just gave him a raise and I suspect if UC wins the Big East, he will get another raise!"

MIKE RILEY
Approval Rating (votes): 3.63 (83) ↓ Down 9% from last week.

What they are saying: "Riley is a great coach, I wish Beaver Nation was still mad and wanting to put Riley out. The (Portland) radio was cracking about how bad Riley was until they beat USC. There are several people around the UW that would love to take Mike off your hands."

JIM HARBAUGH
Approval Rating (votes): 3.59 (85) ↑ Up 6.2% from last week.

What they are saying: "Look at Stanford and Harbaugh. In two years he has taken an absolutely horrible program, and gotten them to within 10 seonds of being 5-0 in the Pac-10, which is remarkable."

MIKE LEACH
Approval Rating (votes): 3.44 (101) ↑ Up 30% from last week.

What they are saying: "Some coaches are willing to be the big fish in a small pond. Some want to be the big fish in a big pond and are willing to risk getting gobbled up for a shot to grow that large. I'm not sure what camp Leach falls into. Maybe we'll make the offer and find out, maybe we won't."

DAVE CHRISTENSEN
Approval Rating (votes): 3.2 (93) ↑ Up 15.2% from last week.

What they are saying: "I don't think Washington will be able to get Pinkel but Christensen may take the position. From what I have seen Christensen may be a bigger loss than Pinkel himself."

BRONCO MENDENHALL
Approval Rating (votes): 3.19 (68) ↓ Down 3.1% from last week.

What they are saying: "Mendenhall tells his players football should be #5 on their list of priorities behind faith, family, knowledge, and friends. Didn't think you could be successful with that kind of philosophy. Mendenhall wouldn't be very popular with a large number of fans for that kind of approach. Just saying."

KYLE WHITTINGHAM
Approval Rating (votes): 3 (79) ↑ Up 27.3% from last week.

What they are saying: "I like that guy a lot. Big W over TCU the other night. Runs the "spread" offense, which is the norm in college football these days."

Click here to post what you have to say about Kyle Whittingham.

PAT HILL
Approval Rating (votes): 2.97 (139) ↓ Down 7.4% from last week.

What they are saying: "Probably not my first choice, but would have the Huskies competative again. Don't think you would see guys laughing on the sidelines when the team was losing. Very good coach. Really are there people that would quit being fans because they don't like the next hire? WOW!"

Click here to post what you have to say about Pat Hill.

BRENT VENABLES
Approval Rating (votes): 2.77 (66) ↑ Up 3.7% from last week.

What they are saying: "Okay enough is enough, I will admit I will listen for an answer with an open mind, but why in the world are so many people so high on Venables? My father, and my best friend are both Oklahoma alumni from different generations who also have never discussed football with each other. The only time I ever hear either of them talk about B.V is when voicing their disgust with him. Shouldn't a potential BCS head coach at least be a very good coordinator?"

LANE KIFFIN
Approval Rating (votes): 2.73 (132) ↓ Down 13.7% from last week.

What they are saying: "I respect him much more for his tenure with the Raiders. He wasn't afraid to push back against the tyrant Al Davis and said 'no' when Davis attempted to make him resign. I respect him for continuing to do his job under those absurd circumstances, and forcing Davis to fire him if he wanted him gone, rather than let himself be pushed to a b.s. 'resignation'."

DAN HAWKINS
Approval Rating (votes): 2.68 (73) ↓ Down 23.7% from last week.

What they are saying: "Dan Hawkins has already proved he can win in the WAC. He is in over his head at Colorado as that program has some severe problems from the two previous head coaches."

Click here to post what you have to say about Dan Hawkins.

DEWAYNE WALKER
Approval Rating (votes): 2.51 (74) ↓ Down 0.5% from last week.

What they are saying: "If we hire a coordinator, hire the very best available. DeWayne Walker has never shown to be more than an average coordinator. He's still living off of the 2006 USC game which based in his 2.5 year body of work was an aberration."

Click here to post what you have to say about DeWayne Walker.

BOBBY HAUCK
Approval Rating (votes): 2.32 (96) ↓ Down 5.5% from last week.

What they are saying: "Hauck is not and never will be the guy to lead this team. Willingham would have about the same record at Montana, and I guarantee Hauck would do about as well here as Try."

Click here to post what you have to say about Bobby Hauck.

MIKE TICE
Approval Rating (votes): 2.22 (77) ↑ Up 0.4% from last week.

What they are saying: "Tice was a QB in college (maryland). All his coaching experience has been at the pro level. I think he could be very good for UW. Downside could be recruiting......no experience there."

Click here to post what you have to say about Mike Tice.

BOB GREGORY
Approval Rating (votes): 1.94 (66) ↑ Up 1.9% from last week.

What they are saying: "I don't want a WSU graduate coaching the Huskies."
