Week 4: Coaching Candidates Approval Ratings

Each week of Washington's search to bring in a new head football coach, we'll be crunching the numbers generated by our polls on each candidate profiled on Dawgman.com's premium football board. We'll also provide a sampling of reader opinion on each candidate. So who is hot, and who is not? Read on!

Our non-scientific college of public-opinion works like this: Dawgman subscribers were polled to rate each candidate on a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest. Any coach that receives a rating of over 4 is considered a 'hot' coaching prospect by the users. Any coach that receives a rating under 3 is not considered a viable coaching candidate. Think of it as your own recruiting guide to coaches, where you get to determine their star value!

So here are the results after polling Dawgman.com users in the two weeks since the announcement was made week! We will post additional updates until a decision is announced.

JIM MORA
Approval Rating (votes): 4.6 (297) ↑ Up 2.0% from last week.

What they are saying: "It will be awesome if Mora is selected. However we must all be prepared for disappointment if he is not released from his Seahawk contract obligations. Bottom line...if NOT Mora then who right? Hopefully from the following wish list: Tedford, Petersen, Pinkel or Wittingham. Emmert and Woodward I am sure will surprise us if it is not one of those candidates."

NICK SABAN
Approval Rating (votes): 4.55 (108) ↑ Up 0.8% from last week.

What they are saying: "In August, every media report (TV, internet or print) about Alabama and Nick Saban would always drop in the fact that he makes $4 million an year and the $32 million dollar man, etc. Cost per win, cost per loss, etc.. Every single time we were talked about, that was mentioned. Nobody's mentioning those things when they talk about us now.... I wonder why?"

GARY PINKEL
Approval Rating (votes): 4.24 (161) ↑ Up 2.6% from last week.

What they are saying: "We all know about (Mora's) loyality to the university, but is he the BEST coach out there? If so, I would like to hear your comments why he fits better than some real good coaches out there that have alot more experience at the College Level. The pedigree with a Riley, Pinkel & Tedford I think is must more appealing. If the powers at be are realling going after someone, why not the people I mentioned above? "

JEFF TEDFORD
Approval Rating (votes): 4.12 (117) ↑ Up 2.1% from last week.

What they are saying: "Tedford, Mora, Riley, Davis, Leach etc would be a HUGE upgrade. Any of those would be great to have and we would win again. I hope for Mora or Tedford but lets count our blessings if we land anyone on the radar. Go Dawgs!"

GARY PATTERSON
Approval Rating (votes): 4.07 (107) ↓ Down 2.0% from last week.

What they are saying: "If it has to do with his lack of West Coast recruiting...I'm sure he can still land his typical 2 and 3 star players, on the west coast...and if he can get them to the level he's getting his past 2 and 3 stars...we'll be just fine…"

WILL MUSCHAMP
Approval Rating (votes): 4.06 (154) ↑ Up 1.2% from last week.

What they are saying: "I can't decide how I feel about this. Is Muschamp really a bigger risk than say, Brian Kelly? Kelly has been a head coach in a smaller conference with a short track record in the Big East. Muschamp has been a coordinator at more than one BIG TIME school including SEC , Big 12 and NFL. Aren't these risks somewhat, if not totally offsetting?"

CHRIS PETERSEN
Approval Rating (votes): 3.95 (167) ↑ Up 5.5% from last week.

What they are saying: "I could care less Peterson's personality if he wins. If it comes down to an equally qualified and nicer guy, I suppose it could make the difference. Saban at Alabama is not a warm and fuzzy person and doesn't tolerate fools, but the guy is a great coach. It seems some like Pat Hill because he is supposedly a nicer guy than Peterson. That is a flat out stupid reason to even look at Pat Hill. The question should simply be is this a guy that can lead UW back to competing with Carroll and USC, and winning the Pac-Ten. If a guy can't meet that criteria, he shouldn't be considered."

TODD GRAHAM
Approval Rating (votes): 3.72 (112) ↓ Down 3.1% from last week.

What they are saying: "First, programs seem to turn around overnight wherever he goes. Heck, he took Rice from 1-11 to 7-5 (and the Owls' first bowl bid in 45 years) in his first season as a head coach. Now that's impressive right there. Another thing I like about Graham is that his offensive coordinator is Gus Malzahn, who has Tulsa averaging 50 points per game this year with a mind-boggling 58-percent success rate on third-down conversions. Having been born in Texas and having coached at Rice, Graham has recruiting ties to the talent-rich Lone Star State. And Malzahn, of course, was the head coach at Springdale High in Arkansas, that state's biggest prospect pipeline."

BUTCH DAVIS
Approval Rating (votes): 3.69 (102) ↓ Down 1.4% from last week.

What they are saying: "Being unfortunately exhiled to a part of the country where the games on TV are predominantly ACC games, I watched the Maryland-UNC game on Saturday. UNC reminds me of UT under Fulmer. They were beaten by a mediocre Maryland team (don't care what their record is - they're mediocre). If tha's what's in store for us if we hire BD, then I say take him off the list."

BRIAN KELLY
Approval Rating (votes): 3.68 (95) ↑ Up 2.8% from last week.

What they are saying: "Hire Brian Kelly because he's got playoff experience...and if the BCS screws it up again this year we are on the verge of playoffs. OH, and Mr. Kelly has a winning resume!"

MIKE RILEY
Approval Rating (votes): 3.61 (89) ↑ Up 1.8% from last week.

What they are saying: "Riley is a great coach, I wish Beaver Nation was still mad and wanting to put Riley out. The (Portland) radio was cracking about how bad Riley was until they beat USC. There are several people around the UW that would love to take Mike off your hands."

Click here to post what you have to say about Mike Riley.

JIM HARBAUGH
Approval Rating (votes): 3.6 (95) ↓ Down 4.6% from last week.

What they are saying: "Look at Stanford and Harbaugh. In two years he has taken an absolutely horrible program, and gotten them to within 10 seonds of being 5-0 in the Pac-10, which is remarkable."

Click here to post what you have to say about Jim Harbaugh.

MIKE LEACH
Approval Rating (votes): 3.52 (112) ↑ Up 3.6% from last week.

What they are saying: "Woody was quoted yesterday that Husky fans would rather win with defense by stopping teams on 3rd and 1 rather than with offense -- "by the 80 yard pass". I think that's a strong hint about one of the candidates. No Leach."

Click here to post what you have to say about Mike Leach.

KYLE WHITTINGHAM
Approval Rating (votes): 3.29 (106) ↑ Up 29.0% from last week.

What they are saying: "Hoping for Mora, betting on Whittingham, and I don't think thats a bad B plan. Kyle may be WHITTy, lets hope he's not WILLing....sorry."

Click here to post what you have to say about Kyle Whittingham.

DAVE CHRISTENSEN
Approval Rating (votes): 3.29 (103) ↑ Up 2.3% from last week.

What they are saying: "I don't think Washington will be able to get Pinkel but Christensen may take the position. From what I have seen Christensen may be a bigger loss than Pinkel himself."

Click here to post what you have to say about Dave Christensen.

BRONCO MENDENHALL
Approval Rating (votes): 3.14 (73) ↑ Up 5.2% from last week.

What they are saying: "Mendenhall tells his players football should be #5 on their list of priorities behind faith, family, knowledge, and friends. Didn't think you could be successful with that kind of philosophy. Mendenhall wouldn't be very popular with a large number of fans for that kind of approach. Just saying."

Click here to post what you have to say about Bronco Mendenhall.

PAT HILL
Approval Rating (votes): 2.93 (145) ↓ Down 3.9% from last week.

What they are saying: "If the worst case is Hill, we are in good shape. After the season Frezneck State is having I'd be disappointed with Hill too. But if you look at his body of work he would fit well here. A proven winner with blue collar likeability. I'd be on board."

Click here to post what you have to say about Pat Hill.

BRENT VENABLES
Approval Rating (votes): 2.83 (69) ↑ Up 3.5% from last week.

What they are saying: "Okay enough is enough, I will admit I will listen for an answer with an open mind, but why in the world are so many people so high on Venables? My father, and my best friend are both Oklahoma alumni from different generations who also have never discussed football with each other. The only time I ever hear either of them talk about B.V is when voicing their disgust with him. Shouldn't a potential BCS head coach at least be a very good coordinator?"

Click here to post what you have to say about Brent Venables.

LANE KIFFIN
Approval Rating (votes): 2.76 (143) ↑ Up 0.7% from last week.

What they are saying: "Nothing makes Kiffin a big hire, just like nothing made Willingham a big hire, yet that's exactly how it was presented to Husky Nation. If they can't pull Mora in, then they'll have to recruit a coach who doesn't have ties to UW, going up against every other big-name school who fired their coach this season. Once again we'll be getting Alpo passed off as filet mignon."

Click here to post what you have to say about Lane Kiffin.

DAN HAWKINS
Approval Rating (votes): 2.64 (78) ↓ Down 4.3% from last week.

What they are saying: "Dan Hawkins has already proved he can win in the WAC. He is in over his head at Colorado as that program has some severe problems from the two previous head coaches."

Click here to post what you have to say about Dan Hawkins.

DEWAYNE WALKER
Approval Rating (votes): 2.48 (87) ↓ Down 8.3% from last week.

What they are saying: "If we hire a coordinator, hire the very best available. DeWayne Walker has never shown to be more than an average coordinator. He's still living off of the 2006 USC game which based in his 2.5 year body of work was an aberration."

Click here to post what you have to say about DeWayne Walker.

BOBBY HAUCK
Approval Rating (votes): 2.38 (106) ↑ Up 0.2% from last week.

What they are saying: "Hauck is not and never will be the guy to lead this team. Willingham would have about the same record at Montana, and I guarantee Hauck would do about as well here as Try."

Click here to post what you have to say about Bobby Hauck.

MIKE TICE
Approval Rating (votes): 2.2 (82) ↓ Down 1.0% from last week.

What they are saying: "Tice was a QB in college (maryland). All his coaching experience has been at the pro level. I think he could be very good for UW. Downside could be recruiting......no experience there."

Click here to post what you have to say about Mike Tice.

DENNIS FRANCHIONE
Approval Rating (votes): 2.0 (4) N/A from last week.

What they are saying: "He slightly improved New Mexico, riding on Brian Urlacher's success. Then he rode LaDainian to success at TCU left for Alabama where he had success but bolted because of the terms of probabtion the school was under. His Texas A&M tenure was disasteraous I think but maybe that's because I hate A&M with a passion. Seems like his teams underperformed more than overperformed. Just my take."

Click here to post what you have to say about Dennis Franchione.

BOB GREGORY
Approval Rating (votes): 1.94 (69) ↓ Down 2.8% from last week.

What they are saying: "I don't want a WSU graduate coaching the Huskies."
