Sarkisian popular hire with Husky targets

The news came down on Thursday that Washington had made its choice in the long coaching search to replace Tyrone Willingham so several Husky commits as well as some top prospects on their list had time to ponder the news over the weekend. Dawgman.com caught up with them and they had nothing but positive thoughts on the new head coach who will be announced today at Montlake.

Generally, the tone was positive from recruits who are looking at Washington still.

Commits like Santiago (Corona, Ca.) TE Marlion Barnett, Sumner OL Grant Cisneros and Clovis West (Fresno) S Nate Fellner all were happy with the selection.

"I have met coach (Steve) Sarkisian a few times, I actually went to camp there over the summer, so I think this is a great thing," Barnett said after his first basketball game of the season. "He's a good coach and he comes from a great program like USC, so it's only going to bolster things."

Fellner was even more hopeful, especially from the recruiting standpoint.

"Coach Sarkisian is a good coach and he has a rep as a good recruiter, at least that's what I've heard," Fellner said. "I think he's going to really boost up the recruiting and that is a big positive I think."

Cisneros committed to Washington the same weekend that Barnett did, when both were on hand for Washington's game against UCLA, and he said he's encouraged about things.

"I think it's awesome actually," Cisneros said. "I am real interested in talking to him and meeting him and seeing what his plans are for the program."

On the recruiting front players like Kapolei (Hi.) OL Stan Hasiak a UCLA commit and Bellarmine College Prep (San Jose) OL Kevin Danser both said they welcomed the news of Sarkisian's imminent hire.

"Coach Sark recruited me in Hawaii, so I know him pretty well already," Hasiak said. "I'm still committed to UCLA, but I would listen if he called me up because I have a lot of respect for him."

"I like it," Danser said. "(Sarkisian) comes from a great program and system at SC, so you can't help but think he's going to turn thing around up there at U-Dub really quick.

"I've liked Washington for a while, but honestly right now I need to talk to them again and see if they are still interested in me because I'm very interested in them, especially now that they have a direction for the program."

Other players like Skyline WR Gino Simone have noted that they would welcome a call from Sarkisian to get more info on things including possibly taking visits as well.

Now that Washington's new head man is in place, Dawgman.com will be all over recruiting the next seven weeks, so get ready Dawgfans, it's going to be a wild ride.
