Helix star makes pledge

When Charles Smith took his visit to Washington a couple of weeks ago, he couldn't get past the city and surroundings. They felt awfully familiar. So when Charles noted after his visit that it was between Oregon and Washington for his services, there was a likelihood the city of Seattle would prevail over the smaller, more land-locked confines of Eugene, Oregon. And so it was this past Tuesday, as Smith verbally committed to Brent Myers and the Huskies during an in-home visit.

"I had it in my mind before I left for the basketball tournament (Red Bluff Holiday Classic) that I wanted to do it," Smith told Dawgman.com. "It really came down to what I liked. I liked the coaches up there. It's a program I've always been interested in."

And then there's the city of Seattle. "The city and and university resembled a lot of where I'm living right now in San Diego," Charles said. And the dye was cast. "Coach Myers came in on Tuesday and that's when I made my decision. I haven't talked to Coach (Rick) Neuheisel yet but Coach Myers said he's going to be calling me today or tomorrow. I didn't want to commit on my visit. That's why I wanted to go to Arizona and I liked it down there but I prefer Washington."

Smith is being recruited as an athlete, which means he could be used on either side - as a quick slotback/receiver or as a tough, physical cornerback.
