Mahan commits to the Dawgs

So far so good this weekend, as Washington got a punter to help fill the void left by the graduation of Jared Ballman. learned on Thursday that Bakersfield P Will Mahan was headed to Montlake this weekend in the hopes of acquiring an offer from the Dawgs and when he got his wish, he committed on the spot to head coach Steve Sarkisian.

"Coach Sark pulled all of us aside at dinner and told all of us we had offers," Mahan told "I was real excited and I said, 'I'm a Husky now' and he was really excited and then I went out in front of everyone and said 'I committed and I'm a Husky'.

"I'm really excited."

Erik Folk has been Mahan's host and the two spent time talking about things.

"He just said the new coaches are good and they are going to get the players back to where they needed to be," Mahan said. "He said if I come in and compete and do what I'm supposed to do, I can have an effect on the season from the get-go."

Mahan was rated one of the top punters (JC or high school) in the country by renowned kicking coach Chris Sailer and after punting the past two years at Bakersfield, Mahan will finish up his coursework no later than May and he'll have three years to play two once he steps on campus.

"I have one class I have to make up and if I can get it done before March I can be here for Spring ball, but if not I will be here in June for sure once summer quarter starts," Mahan noted.
