Derrick Williams CaliFlorida game update

Derrick Williams, a 5-10, 195-pound running back from Bellflower (Calif.) St John Bosco, wasn't the key RB in the California All-Stars' lineup when they took on Florida's best last Saturday. That honor went to Maurice Drew. But Williams had quite a few big runs to establish himself as one of the top backs in the state. And he helped his California teammates take it to a Florida squad that was quite vocal all week about their own talent.

"It was great," Williams told Dawgman.com about the game. "All week they were talking trash, so we had to put it to 'em. We knew they had a lot of players that were highly ranked, so we had to show them what California football is all about."

Derrick said the practices were the highlight of his week. "You get to go up against the best guys in California," he said. "In regular practice, you're better, but with these practices everyone was good."

His Bosco teammate, Joe Cowan, caught a touchdown pass in the game. "We talked the night before about what we were going to do if we scored," Derrick said. "Joe wrote 'CALIFORNIA' on his stomach with eye black and said if he scored he would show it. He did." (laughs)

Williams has narrowed his choices to Pac-10 schools. "I'm visiting Arizona this coming weekend, then Washington and then UCLA." He might visit Westwood with Cowan. He's already visited California and all of those schools have offered except for the Huskies.

Why is he visiting Seattle? "Well, Joe's dad (Tim) went there and Joe keeps saying how nice it is up there. I know they have a good program. And on paper they are a good school too."

UCLA, despite the change in coaches, is a school Derrick has always been looking at. "They called me after the game," he said. "They've been one of those schools all along that have been recruiting me. They want me."
