Steve Axman to UCLA

Steve Axman, Quarterback Coach and Assistant Head Coach at Washington, has moved on to assume the Offensive Coordinator duties under new UCLA Head Coach Karl Dorrell. The news came this morning via Dave 'Softy' Mahler and KJR 950AM and was later confirmed by Axman via an interview with Mahler.

The move to Westwood is nothing new for Axman. He was the Bruins' QB Coach and Offensive Coordinator 15 years ago. He was an obvious choice for Dorrell. Axman gave Dorrell his first coorinator assignment at Northern Arizona and the two were reunited at Washington in 1999. That year Axman was the Quarterbacks Coach while Dorrell assumed the Offensive Coordinator responsibilities under current Husky Head Coach Rick Neuheisel.

Some of the quarterbacks coached under Axman include Troy Aikman, Neil O'Donnell, Scott Zolak, Marques Tuiasosopo and Cody Pickett. This past season, Pickett became the first quarterback in Pac-10 history to pass for more than 4,000 yards in a season. And offenses under Axman are known for having a lot of firepower. He inherited a program at Northern Arizona that had experienced just three winning seasons during the 1980s and had never qualified for the Division I-AA postseason playoffs. During his 8 years as coach there they averaged over 30 points a game offensively.

Prior to his four-year stint in Seattle, Axman has had coaching assignments at East Stroudsburg State, Albany State, Army, Illinois, Arizona, the Denver Gold of the USFL, Stanford, UCLA, Maryland, Northern Arizona and Minnesota.

Axman has authored six books and produced several instructional videos about football. His most recent release "101 Pass Patterns" was published in 2001. His other books are titled "Coaching Quarterback Passing Mechanics," "101 Quarterback Drills," "The Art and Science of Coaching" and "Coaching Offensive Backs." His first non-coaching book, "Achieving Your Success" is due for release next year.
