Carter softens Husky commitment

One of the most underrated players in the state of California as far as the 2010 recruiting class goes has been Santee (Los Angeles) WR Tevin Carter. He's got excellent size and great speed and that has teams clamoring for his attention. Washington got on him early, so early in fact he decided to commit to them less than a month ago, but things change all the time in recruiting...

Carter spoke with this afternoon and here's what he had to say about the stories coming out about softening his commitment to the Huskies.

"It was still early and I sorta started to realize that as the weeks have gone by," Carter siad. "I'm still committed to Washington, don't take me off of their list, but USC and Cal are two schools that I'm looking at and I want to check them out before I make any final decisions."

Carter said California extended him an offer early in the process and have continued to pursue him even after he committed to the Huskies and that USC has been on him for quite some time as well.

"I was supposed to go up to Cal last weekend, but my plans fell through so I'm probably going to head up there next weekend (June 26th or 27th)," Carter said. "I'm going to SC's 'Rising Stars' camp on the 24th and 25th and they said there's a good chance I could get offered if I do well there."

So with two in-state schools recruiting him and possibly having offers from both, does that mean the Huskies could be on the outside looking in when it's all said and done?

"Not at all," Carter said. "Actually I really like them and I love the coaches. Coach (Demetrice Martin) is a great guy, really easy to talk with and I really like him a lot and they have a good program up there they are building.

"I just shouldn't have committed as early as I did and I probably should have let things sort themselves out, but I really love Washington a lot, that's why I did it in the first place.

"I'm taking some visits in the fall to schools and that's when I will make my final decision. I haven't even seen U-Dub yet, so they aren't out of it at all and they are actually still my favorite even if USC offers."

As a junior in 2008, Carter posted 28 receptions for 833 yards and 11 touchdowns as a receiver, 221 yards and three more touchdowns on 19 carries and four kickoff returns for touchdowns while racking up 93 tackles and four picks from his safety position.

Earlier this month Carter posted a 21.38 to finish third in the 200 meters and a 10.61 to finish fourth in the 100 meters at the Cali High State Championships.

We'll have more from him in the coming weeks and months after he finishes up his visits to the other schools.
